Seen a clip a few days ago of something similar that happened to Man City in 1996. They were battling relegation and a fan with a radio said given results elsewhere they were safe with the draw they had, which made it's way to the bench and the team stopped playing. By the time they realised some idiot had his maths wrong and they were going down it was too late. Funny watching them literally passing their status as a Premier League club away.
That's one of the many reasons why, despite all their money and megabucks squad, I refuse to see them as this all encompassing beast that can't be challenged. Them yoyo-ing up and down the leagues is still in memory.
