As you can tell the evidence is quite murky, but it supports the "zoonotic origins" theory which I had understood to be a bit closer to the consensus view.
Which is also the theory about most of these novel contagions: for the past couple of centuries, intensive industrial agribusiness has created a historically unprecedented rate of chances for viral mutations to jump between species.
From a political standpoint, I think if there were anything we had any chance to access that resembled a "smoking gun" to support the lab leak theory we'd never have heard the end of it. That'd be some hard shit to cover up.
