I'm mad about the loss and officiating, but I am even more annoyed by the way we play. I know we are missing a couple of key players but it shouldn't matter that much if our attack was less rigid and predictable, and less dependent on individual genius.

I’m in the luxurious position of being able to say what I think about the falling standards of officialdom in our top league - but imagine taking a call from a high ranking PL broadcast official reminding you who pays your wages. Scary. It happened to two people that I know recently. The message was clear ‘stop criticising the refs’. What sort of world are we living in when people who run the game also want to steer the narrative?

I think some people in the media have made thing worse for the refs, their comments after the game only further erodes trust in the refs and the league. As much as the establishment think the general public are fools but we can tell when there is a cover up.

There are two issues: probity and performance. PGMOL referees are effectively the regulatory bureaucrats here.

Here's how you fix the problem:

Substantially increase the fixed income of referees at all levels. Just give them twice as much: compared to all this it'll cost a pittance.
Define probity more clearly as far as income, asset and gift declarations. Ban referees from media or football consulting income.
Enforce probity via audits, with punishment either by expulsion or "relegating" these guys back down the leagues for long periods where they will earn less.
Mandatory rotation through match, linesman and VAR duty for referees at all levels.
Relegate and promote 3 referees each season for each level, based on performance.

Put all that in place and I guarantee you'll have a platoon of excellent referees in place with personalities like dentists (no offence to any dentists) within three seasons. Get rid of all the ones who think they're part of the entertainment or have an eye out for every side hustle.

Why do people in England never ask themselves the question: why has VAR made the game more fair, eliminated major mistakes and significantly reduced controversy surrounding refereeing decisions in every major league except the EPL? Why does it do the opposite there?

Keys is a hack, but it'd be weird not to believe him on this. Especially because of how evident it is just from seeing how they(especially Neville) completely changed their stances after being very harsh on VAR for a while.

Well I just think why do we "believe" him on this, is it just because it's a message that goes with what we would like or think. That's something that many people go to in the rush to support their positions just because they confirm whatever position they already held.

I just think he's not a good faith actor in anything he does and so has no credibility for me as someone to cite. Even if he somehow was telling the truth,I just can't rely on someone with his history it would need to be from someone with greater credibility in my view.

It can be easy to point to something and not dig to deeply when it supports your own position but the context of who is saying and for what reason etc also is relevant to me. Otherwise when he has a go at us he's clearly wrong but when he's saying stuff for us we totally think he's legit. It's not consistent in my view.

I think Neville is just being a shit stirrer makes great content to dig out Arteta and Arsenal that's basically it
