This was not a bad half. City were always gonna apply pressure but when we bypassed it we always looked dangerous. But again, the final ball was missing.

Jorginho shoulda taken his shot, Eddie shoulda put his in. Also the lad is such an amateur for that offside from Odegaard's ball.

First 25 minutes was the worst we've played all season. I've never seen the players so inhibited and fearful, they look like their heads are so full of instructions to nullify City that they're completely unable to play their own game. Understand Martin trying to amp up the crowd (the noise they're making every time Raya, who admittedly has had a mare, gets on the ball is extremely unhelpful), but we conceded the impetus from kick off and let City kill the crowd. Serious mental block here.

Midfields too negative. We keep passing back to the defence and Raya for long balls to Jesus but when he gets it we can't turn it into a meaningful attack because he and Ode just get swarmed by blue shirts.

The team is contributing to Raya's poor passing by passing backwards and failing to show any impetus to break the lines. By the time it's got to Raya, you have have had 4 odd players all pass the buck.

RocktheCasbah I am heartened by a show of some resilience and a possible attitude change towards the end of the half.
Pep does not hesitate to make changes at the half (tactically or forced hand), true. However Kovacic is back out.

Have to say, much prefer someone of the Jorginho type playing a 6 (he obviously has his limitations).. Hope Rice can make the 8 role work for him, even though I'm yet to be fully convinced of it so we go all out for a proper DLP in the summer as will gives a lot more variety in our play.

Jesus has worked his ass off and has been our only outlet offensively. Trossard and Nketiah might as well not even be on the pitch, and Martin hasn't been much better. Rice at 8 has had a good game defensively but offensively he's offered even less than Havertz. White and Zinchenko have been really poor too.

fwiw I thought the ref's calls were spot on. Was VARS job to make him look at the screen for the orange card.

Tactics

They have more players who can play keep ball than we do, so they were always going to dominate possession. Think we should therefore stay compact and go direct as soon as we have the ball instead of trying to go toe to toe with them.

We are somewhat limited with the personnel on the pitch, but Partey, Martinelli and Havertz coming on after half time could cause them problems with a direct approach.
