DiabyKungFu fair. Just build a squad sensibly. The way we finally have. That said, extending Nelson and Nketiah has given us options for selling 2 players who could fetch us £50-70m in this market. And again, both are pure profit at a time when we are skating close to the FFP edge.

Arshavin was a proper signing.

Players that can help us get across the line. They can be squad players like Jorginho too.

That's not a reason not to sign him. He won't make a difference next season if we sign him in the summer either, that doesn't mean we should never sign youngsters.

We do need a 'proper signing' as well though.

Cautionary story time. We nearly spent 80-100m on Mudryk and Caicedo to ‘get us over the line’ last Jan, and it doesn’t look like either would have made a difference based on what they’ve done at Chelsea.

I don’t think we should ever sign players for short term goals and then convince ourselves they suit the long term too. That’s the path to having dysfunctional squads.

Don't think either were seen as short term signings, both were 21 at the time. If anything Trossard was the short term signing and has worked out pretty well.

And while it’s claimed Rice would have still been our main target in the summer, when FFP was so tight I don’t know how we’d have managed to sign both Caicedo and Rice unless the plan was to sell Partey - who knows how that would have panned out.

Trossard was at least cheap, and I don’t actually have objections to quality older players either if they serve a purpose over 2-3 years.

Yeah agree with that. People are lying to themselves if they think we can sign Rice after landing Caicedo. Even if we sold Partey, I think it wouldn't have been enough for FFP unless we sold ESR too.

That said, signings that get us over the line, short or long term does not matter to me. The trophy is worth alot more than a January expenditure.

goon I think we wanted Rice and Caicedo fora combined price similar to Rice and Havertz. Seems to be when Caicedo signed that deal with Brighton we moved on.

You don't have to look any further than Trossard. By all accounts, he was a successful signing who made an immediate impact and was integral to our best run in the latter half of the season. Yet, we ended up with fewer points.

Signing players doesn't guarantee anything and often doesn't even increase your odds of anything. They're a gamble which may or may not workout. Obviously, good recruitment increases the odds of a player being a success, but that doesn't necessarily translate into more wins or more trophies for the team.

Liverpool bought Diaz whilst chasing a quadruple and he too was an overwhelming success but in the end, they didnt win the league nor the CL. It's just not the guarantee that people make it out to be.

We wanted Caicedo for the amount that we paid for Havertz. There's every reason Rice was still the main summer target and we would have been looking at partnering the two long term. I don't think we would have bought Havertz in that case who felt like an opportunistic signing and not someone we courted for some time.

The fact that we have Havertz and are still likely looking for another midfielder with a more defensive profile says to me that Caicedo wouldn't have stopped us from doing much of anything we did last summer.
