I'm okay with the idea an egregious error gets specific criticism and you don't have to (and probably shouldn't) naturalise it as a predictable or inevitable aspect of our tactical outlook. They weren't with Ramsdale.

Half the last mile of performance we need from this squad, if we're to get to milestones like our first European championship, will come from eliminating more of these errors.

Clrnc will be interesting to see what United do. I was looking at some of their heat maps and networks. They have the most illogical structure on the ball. You can’t tell what the overall principles and tactics are just looking at their data, the way you can with other teams. It’s very fragmented.

Claudius In terms of the error itself. He was trying to lob it in to Partey who was 20 yards ahead. He then saw that Partey was being pressed. And he tried to switch mid kick, and this happened. Watch replays from behind the goal. So he looks like he tried to change his mind and fucked up the kick.

Don't think this is correct at all. Just rewatched the incident, at no point did he try to switch his kick as his eyes was focused on the ball and Partey was not being pressed. His technique was just found wanting as the ball got away from him a little.

Big Willie Where Raya gives us the most advantage compared ti Ramsdale, at least in my opinion, is his ability in collecting and holding onto balls kicked into the box. He gobbles those up, and although I noticed that early on, it wasn't until the last few months that it became clear to me how much of a positive influence that had on our defending as a whole. There just isn't much fear about crosses being put in because the defenders are so good that they'll head it away, and the rest of the time the keeper collects. Makes us almost impossible to play against.

Agreed, in the air he is very dominant. You don't want your players to have to deal with every ball in the box and especially around the 6 yard box. If the ball can be claimed he'll take it.

Partey was about to be pressed by 3 players so it would have been a calamity either way. Just a terrible decision in all aspects.

Yes, because normally there's not that much to comment on in terms of his performance.

Hardly knives out btw if you actually read the more negative comments in this thread. And my opinion hasn't changed in the last couple of months, I just don't need to keep repeating myself when we keep a clean sheet: he's okay, shielded by our best defensive unit of the last 25 years but not convinced he was worth the hassle.

Save against Wolves was good but honestly, offset by other moments he could have probably done a bit better on over that time period.

We would have been out of the champions League a round earlier as well, if not for Raya.

And the only "hassle" was in the media/fans. The stats were in favor of Raya. The players didn't seem bothered by the change, and the manager was convinced and has been justified.

I get what you're saying but renewing Ramsdale's contract a few weeks before signing Raya looks like muddled thinking to me. Can't pretend there wasn't an adjustment period when Raya first came in either.

It's done now. I'd just rather have kept our powder dry for a generational talent, which I don't think Raya is.
