I wouldn’t worry too much about the xG etc today. It’s our first game with barely settled players like Havertz and Rice in what was a relatively unused arrangement plus Eddie up top. It was a game to get fit and to learn a few things. We will need to be versatile in how we play so that teams don’t clock us this season. So credit to Arteta for trying new things. This is about as safe a game as we could’ve had to experiment. I was anxious for the flowing football at times, but I’m comfortable with the use of time.

we have been beset by defensive errors and and shaky set piece management since the world cup, and it continued through preseason until today. we looked so solid in those departments in the first half of last season

lorddulaarsenal kid is a luxury sedan. So versatile. If Tomi had been available in the season run-in, White would’ve seen us through at centre back.

One thing I did like about yesterday’s show was the fluidity of the defense. With Partey initially as the inverted right back, White tended to be central. But as the game progressed, White started going forward more, with Partey covering. Very reminiscent of how Sheffield used to do overlapping centre backs with Baldock and Basham. We were harder to track as we did this.

Timber is our best suited left back to do the same with Rice, who naturally likes to play left CDM. So it appears the formation we saw was probably a way to fit both Partey and Rice in comfortable roles intriguing.
