I'm slightly concerned about him as our long-term 6 simply because he lacks what Partey has in terms of seeing and executing quick passes from deep, through the thirds.

Was crap yesterday and I was underwhelmed by him at Anfield (on the ball - but I was by Odegaard even more).

Can't stress how much I think this point has been over-egged within our fanbase. The notion that Rice can't and doesn't execute progressive passes is not based in reality. I also think Party's ability in this regard has been inflated whilst he's been out of the team.

Don Pacifico he progresses play via carrying it or switching the ball. Neither is always on or necessarily dangerous.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert that's some of what he does but not all. There's a degree of acclimatisation to a new team but as the season has gone on, he's started to attempt more progressive passes. I'm sure there's room for improvement but I really don't think we're missing Partey in that regard.

Saliba has no passing range, what's all the shimmies good for if he's laying the ball off to the nearest man. What about a 30 yard raking pass? Hell, even Joachim Anderson can hit a long pass. I say replace.

We have definitely lost something in midfield in certain games because of it but overall he has obviously been a net positive, Arteta has been trying different approaches to find a solution like getting Ode to drop more deeper.

daredevil you need space for 30 yard raking passes. Saliba can do those passes. You’ve seen them last season. Our possession / territory are really making life difficult for a lot of players when it comes to catching defenaes unawares

RocktheCasbah I see. I was looking at passing data the other day. Virjil is living off these long passes, particularly to Salah. If you look at attack speed data on Pool’s build up versus ours, we are slow throughout. They are quite fast in first two thirds of the field. And this is driven by those direct passes from TAA and VVD straight to the forwards, who then often find unstructured defences to attack. Our players just don’t have this joy. We need to find ways to make this space

JazzG it's not about how many passes he's making. It's about when he makes them, and to whom? (i.e. what option did he pick? The higher risk pass that breaks lines and injects chaos, or a safer one, still "progressive", but banishes us to a congested channel, and ensures the horseshoe is alive and kicking)

Coombs exactly. Ideally he sits behind Partey and let the ghanian do more of the box to box thing while he cleans up or drives a press. Real shame we were robbed of his qualities this season. I really would have liked to see his evolution/interpretation of that right back role.

Thought Arteta was onto something with that particular bit of early season tinkering

Burnwinter I think it will massively improve us if we use Rice & Partey in midfield. If we stick Partey in Rice's position it might make us better going forward but will also leave us much more defensively exposed. Having both however would be a massive help. Havertz is not a No.8 and I believe is only playing there because of Partey's injury.

flobaba I don't think anyone is suggesting Rice is some elite deep lying playmaker but for his position his passing is good. He is an elite defensive midfielder with very good passing range.

flobaba Its also about how deep he's playing. He was in between the centre halves at times on NYE and clearly pissing Gabriel off by being there. Taking that stat on its own as proof of anything is just desperately clutching at straws.
