Also - as a deeper point - none of this matters. Look at Man City and Real Madrid, two of the most successful clubs of the past decade, they basically hand out the armband to the longest serving player and move on with their lives.

The focus has been on creating a leadership group instead.

Sicario2 It is not woke, I just don't understand why anyone would give a shit? There is absolutely nothing to gain from making Rice captain mid-season, what material difference will it make to the team? However there is a lot more to lose by stripping Odegaard, firstly you'd upset a key player in Odegaard and then on top you'd potentially upset squad harmony. I simply can't get my head around why anyone would look at us, top of the league and top of the CL table, still in all four competitions and think you know what we really need to do here is strip Odegaard of the captaincy and give it Rice. I get people saying long term Rice should be our captain, I also share that belief but why the hell is this even being discussed right now?

The biggest compliment I can give Rice is that he's exactly the kind of signing Alex Ferguson would have made in the late 90s or early 00s: he went out and got the absolute best domestic player he could and didn't give a shit about the cost, and then United had an absolute bastard of a player for a solid decade who was already Premier League proven and helped them win 3-4 league titles. It used to drive me mad. United needs a new defender? Let's just pick up Rio. Midfield needs some bolstering? Let's get Carrick. Rooney breaks through? Let's sign him. Etc. Greedy transfer alrogithm.

Still can't believe we signed Rice, but I'm so glad we did. I knew the fee we paid would look like a bargain. He's going to win more than one title with us during his time here.

Klaus yeah. ferdinand/Rooney vibes. both fees were high at the time but turned out to be bargains. no-one talks about rices fee unless its to say it was a bargain. the fact that fee didn't turn into a millstone around his neck speaks volumes to how well the player and club have done here.

Going a long way back in time and it's a massive 'what if', but I remember we were linked with Carrick when Vieira looked likely to leave. I don't remember how serious the link was given that I just relied on Ceefax and Teamtalk for transfer news back in those days, but he was the perfect player to build a midfield around instead of Fabregas. God I wish we'd have signed him in 2005.

I think Gary Neville or someone else has said similar, players like him and Kane Fergie would have done whatever it took to get them for Man Utd. Our lot were always penny pinchers and obsessed about value but Fergie always understood that even if he has to overpay now these players will come good and pay for themselves in the end with trophies. We were like that for Rice, Arteta identified him and basically Edu was told he needs to sign for Arsenal end of make it happen.

Dom Biggest what if is we should have signed Xabi Alonso and he went on be a legend for Real Madrid and Bayern but instead we walked away over a tiny amount of money which just about sums up Arsenal football at that time. Would have transformed our midfield and a signing like that convinces other players to stick around as well imo.

The 2008 and 2015 summers were the absolute worst. We built 80% of a good team but let it break down through inaction.

Benitez has recently said he refused to let Alonso go to Arsenal. I haven't watched the interview but from the snippets I saw he didn't want Alonso at Arsenal. Both Suarez and Xabi Alonso should've been Arsenal players but the Liverpool coach or ownership at those times showed more nerve than Wenger and Kroenke did with Van Persie.
