He did a lot of Gilberto Silva underrated stuff plus more. I thought he had a solid 7.5/10 game. He's still not match fit too.

Rice is not fully fit, that's been a theme of the preseason. He's gonna step up. I don't think it'll take six months either.

decent debut i thought. defensively very switched on for the first 60 minutes, and could've nicked a goal which would've made people perceive his performance differently. totally gassed in the last 20 minutes though. you can tell he's doesn't yet have the confidence - or responsibility - to drive with the ball from deep. that part of his game will add alot to us

Very good defensively especially in the first half, though was surprised by him being unable to keep up with the counter for the goal. Seemed to run out of steam.

Liked that he was able to contribute to the build up play and play nice little exchanges with Partey and White etc to beat the press. What’s clear though is if he’s going to play as a 6 he’s going to need either Partey or Zinchenko playing the inverted role next to him.

That Forest player was fast though but he did look like he was running on fumes at the end. But also I think he saw White was there so didn't keep going.

Good point about Zinchenko, when he is there I think Rice will cover for him and Zinchenko will run the game from midfield.

Thats not the right attitude, he needs to get back and help out anyway. TBH it was a hugely disappointing moment from him in a match where he was doing alright otherwise and starting to make an impact. After that he went quiet too, probably due to tiredness. I remain annoyed he came back lacking full fitness, normally he's a machine in that regard.

Its possible he's been slowed down by a rumoured calf injury rather than ill discipline in the off-season. Agree though that no one should have eased off for that counter despite the parity in numbers back.

Seems much more likely he has been working off an injury issue of some kind than, knowing both him and Arteta, he decided to put himself on extra long furlough after signing the biggest contract of his career.

Appreciating what this guy offers. If he does what he's doing now all season, including under pressure, and just grows a little more into his role, he'll even be worth a premium on his insane fee.

One thing Declan may want to chill on is his directing of passing options to others. Not sure he's in a position to fully understand the system just yet and don't want him misleading a player or confusing him.

He was very good today. Better defensively and much more expansive with his passing and movement to receive the ball.

Interesting that he played in the single pivot today vs last week where he claimed to play wide in a diamond. This role seemed to suit him much better.

For years we’ve been crying out for a leader. If he leads by example I have no problem him instructing players.

Yeah, he did. Will be interesting to see how he's used throughout the season. Showed what he's capable of today.

Much better today. Will be an absolute monster defensively when he is fully fit. Still feel his and Havertz progressive passing needs to be improve and become more in sync with the team to give us more fluidity, but will come with time...

You can see growing into his role already. He has spoken a few times about how he is learning new things so would always take a bit of time for him to fully grow into the role.

enjoyed his performance. clever passing, tough defending, the occasional burst forward. I think he's still playing with a bit of deference to a few of the established names in the squad, which is understandable. once he feels like he fully belongs and can let his nuts hang, he's going to be huge.
