I was actually thinking of Szoboszlai when I wrote that. Didn't know that much about him before he signed for Liverpool, but he has looked really impressive in that 8 role so far.

I actually believe that's the reason Arteta bought him. For Link up play. Except he's merely okay at it. Not great. Not even very good. Just okay.

I think the most annoying thing is that the Havertz we see now has been there for all to see. Nobody can say that we couldn't have expected this transfer to turn out like this (if he doesn't somehow come good).

In fact, this transfer to that price was so unexpected that I thought Arteta must have seen something I haven't, he must have some kind of masterplan. But it seems like we're just getting the expected, the same Havertz who's been playing in this league for years.

Yep that articulates my main issue and everything we are seeing is consistent with the player he was at Chelsea even the fact that everyone has a sense of not being sure where his best position is supposed to be. My Chelsea mates had said the exact same thing. It's just annoying to have spent so much in fee and wages when we had other things we needed to spend on.

Clrnc the idea of Havertz as a physical presence was just desperation when people started realising he wasn't going to be any good with the ball.

Jesus stats aren't great there either, seems like a weird game to persist with him there and not throw Eddie in instead, especially after Saka got injured.

this is my feeling as well, only tempered by the fact that I also feel that he was just signed on the spur of the moment, and we were generally thinking of Rice there alongside Partey.

He's much better as a striker. Players who can play with their back to goal and bring others in are more valuable than players who run the channels and look to score goals. The latter type in a 4-3-3 variant is only worthwhile if they can score an absurd amount of goals to forgo their lack of connectedness. People knock Nketiah for his lack of touches but Haaland is exactly the same. I bet he registered less than 10 touches today.

Sicario2 - Tier 1

I think we finally found his role.

He can be our Giroud, plan B striker coming off the bench. It removes the pressure from starting the game when he looks like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. Plus as we all know and we have enough evidence for it, he is largely anonymous and ineffective playing as a number 8.

Some of his touches were exquisite when dealing with difficult long balls.
