Burnwinter hi Burns. Good post. Let me answer some questions on some of the areas.
Buy amortisation is over the useful life. So you’re correct that an £80m player is expensed at £16m per year on income statement

Extend: when you extend the player after 3 years when £48m has so far been expensed, the remaining £32m rolls onto the new contract. So a 4 year extension becomes £8m a year amortisation.

Sell that entire £32m is expensed on the spot to remove the asset from the balance sheet. You record either a gain or a loss relative to this final number based on what you receive. This was always the issue with selling Pepe.

This is all separate from the cash flow statement that will follow the actual release of funds. All salary goes into the income statement and cash flow only. This includes signing bonuses. It’s not an asset.

Signing bonus: not an asset. Will be recorded on income statement snd cash flow as it happens. So £100m signing bonus to Mbappe - just expense as paid. Could be £100m in one go, or £20m per year. Doesn’t touch balance sheet and amortisation because this is just the cost of operating the player, not the capital associated with acquiring from a 3rd party

Claudius Thanks a lot Claud … I was fairly sure I was on the right track, but into the rough on the details. Your clarifications are very coherent.

Based on what you've said—perhaps you can confirm what's below—it is very shit in situational terms when a club "does a Pépé" and signs a player for 5 years for £100m (+£10m pa wages, for argument's sake) whose value then declines to £30m after 2 years, or similar.

After that 2 years, the club might be able to flog this flop off for £30m. That removes his wages from the books, but also brings forward and immediately applies to the books the outstanding £60m of amortised liability on his "useful life" as an asset.

Even after selling this flop at a knockdown price and offloading his wages, the club is left at a –£20m (= +£30m + £10m - £60m) position on this player for that year (or season). This is not so bad in a purely financial sense as the future liability has been dissolved, but given the way FFP and PSR are reported it could still tie hands in the market, or lead to sanctions.

Clrnc Havertz was like Nureyev crossed with a Panzer out there. He's looked good lately but that was the performance of a £65m player, perhaps the first he's had. He could easily have scored or assisted a couple, and he was steamrolling every marker.

He's one of the best false nines around because he doesn't necessarily have to sacrifice his goal threat to facilitate the others. His biggest strength is his athleticism and running power which coupled with his movement makes him a nightmare to play against.

He can run the channels, he can drop deep and help the build up, he can go long and run in behind, we can play aerially to him, we can play it on the floor. He's so versatile. If he can add clean striking ability and shooting accuracy. We have a world beater on our hands.

Yesterday was the most assured I’ve seen him play. As in give the ball to me im the man kind of thing. Polar opposite to earlier in the season when he was often hiding on the pitch.
