I'm wondering - is this guy more of a third CB like Tomi/White, or is he more of an inverted CM type like Zinc, or is he more of a wide fullback like Tierney? What kind of player is he?

From what I've been able to see through touch comps, he's more Ben White than anyone else in our squad. Although, I would say he looks quicker, more agile, and better technically, but not as strong or dominant in duels.

I was thinking he was an alternative signing to Caicedo as a tucked-in fullback playing in the 2nd line (aka the midfield - so more Zinchenko than White), but having watched him more, I think he'll play in the 1st/defensive line alongside Saliba and Gabriel, ala White.

I think Lavia (or maybe a sneaky late move for Caicedo?) is the option for the rigth-sided Zinchenko option.

He’s not like Zinchenko. Definitely looks to have great technique but Zinchenko has excellent pausa, ability to sell dummies and execute intricate passes. Timber’s technique is more about being nimble enough to free himself from pressure.

See him as an inverted RB as well and a reserve CB. Has a lot about his game and looks good at progressing the ball from deep, not sure how well it will translate in the premier League... His stats are great all round though, so that's really promising.

Seems to also have traits to potentially play in CM. Has a bit Partey about him in the way he quickly turns away from pressure. Fair bit weaker mind you but also quite a bit faster. Might even have the ability on the ball to play further forward. Looks like a pretty good all rounder. But yeah, he'll probably play primarily as a fullback for now. Really excited to get him tbh.

Just something about his ability to turn and dribble his man with a feignt, often without even touching the ball is very Parteyesque. Hopefully being so young means as he fills out and adds that fully grown man strength, he'll not be on another level technique and skill wise, but also physically dominating our opponents. What's clear is he has a lot going for him and a lot to work with.

Similar to White, he seems to be very talented across the board, and could probably play in 3 different positions in the current system.

Also, White was played into the ground last season because Tomiyasu wasn't close to the same level as him and had his usual injury struggles. So, Timber is actually a crucial signing, but for some reason I'm still surprised by it. It's a big investment and he's a really coveted young player. Impressive move by us!

I think if Tierney stays, then Tomiyasu goes.

I'd sell the Japanese anyway because his injury troubles aren't likely to suddenly go away.

If we get Lavia (or very optimistically, Caicedo) and consider him as an option as the right-sided tucked-in FB role that Zinchenko plays (and Partey played against Wolves), then I think Tomiyasu is too good to be the 5th choice CB - it wouldn't be fair to him, even if it would be better for us. Holding is probably just about up to that job.

LB - Zinchenko, Tierney
LCB - Gabriel, Kiwior, Timber
RCB - Saliba, White, Timber, Holding
RB - White, Timber, Lavia/Caicedo

Don't think Tomi is leaving regardless of what happens tbh. Guy isn't on huge wages, hasn't been angling for a move, has a number of years left on his deal and seems content to be a backup player.

That said if we can get a decent amount for him I'd move him on purely from a fitness perspective. However if he was fit for the majority of the season I would t even consider it as the guy is a really good player, covers two positions potentially 3 to a decent level and isn't a troublemaker.

Looking at Timber’s numbers and physicality makes me feel like it’s unlikely he’ll play at CB. Arteta put a lot of effort in increasing the size and physicality of our back line so I don’t think he’ll change that

Claudius but all reports are saying Arteta wants Tierney to stay. I wonder if Timber is related to that. Variation at LB maybe. I certainly don't want to see Timber/White-Salba-Garbiel and then Kiwior as the back 4. We need full backs who can get forward.

but that's the thing though, as long as you're not on arteta's shit list he wants you to stay even if he doesn't really play you. the crutch of "i have this option available if ..."

Meatwad arteta has convinced a few players to stay and it didn't end up panning out for them. AMN springs to mind. nketiah, balogun and ESR are wobbling a bit there too.
