Mirth not only that, but they're two completely different jobs where the job advertisements for each of them would list very different requirements. While the ref on the field has to deal with the pressure from the crowd and players, be fit to position himself well and be able to make decisions in the blink of an eye etc, the perfect VAR ref would be more of a tech savvy football nerd.
Giving this new position to the same people who are the onfield refs doesn't make any sense, even if you ignore the buddy factor.
