Spurs were ordinary. Didn't get a sniff till we tired. They were brave and have a likeable personality managing them, that's it. We have our issues but we should have beaten them. Jorginho will possibly not make the kind of the mistake he did till he plays football. He avoids trying to act smart with the ball and we win that game mostly.

flobaba I copped a bit of heat here last season for suggesting Howe had outperformed Arteta in terms of quickly turning Newcastle into an effective side. I still stand by it.

I mean either Saint Eddie Howe has got them to our level and beyond, quicker and spending less, and they're now having a start to the league season we'd consider unacceptable or ... they're not actually at our level.

That sounds very simplistic. Like I posted in the Artetaball thread, Newcastle had by far the toughest opening fixtures of all the PL teams.

I wouldn't make an "either it must be this or that" conclusion from it.

FWIW, I definitely don't think they're on our level. But then again, I also don't think they'll need to be on our level for me to say that Howe has done a better job than Arteta.

I know what fixtures and losses they've had. And if we'd had exactly those fixtures and losses, the level of existential wangst around here would be extreme.

They're a fine football team, I wake up on a Thursday morning and see they've beaten City. Just think there's a couple round here who like to hang shit on Arsenal by pointing to a Newcastle utopia that doesn't exist.

Burnwinter I imagine our ambitions are to win the league this season, while theirs aren't. Losing three matches in the first six would practically change the outlook of our entire season.

Also, like I said, Newcastle don't have to be better than Arsenal for Howe to have done a better job ('m not even saying that he has, I think it's pretty hard to judge). The starting points weren't the same.

It's always easy to talk up these journeyman managers who bring midtable clubs into European competition as miracle workers, your Potters, De Zerbis and whatnot. I can't stop you, but I think many tend to overpraise Howe for not very much.

Fair enough. I think it's equally easy to talk up managers who win the league with Real Madrid, City and Bayern because the only argument you need is "they win".

I guess I half-agree with you in that I agree that many tend to overpraise Howe, but don't agree that he's done "not very much".

So far though, calling Arteta someone who brought a midtable club into European competition is probably much more apt than comparing him to Pep and Klopp.

There's an obvious Premier League Newcastle manager to compare Mikel Arteta to: Kevin Keegan. A former hero and captain of the club as a player who returned as manager to lead a barnstorming title chase that ended in a terrible choke and a loss to the overly cashed up incumbent champions.

People still talk about Keegan on Tyneside these days and his "I will love it!" tirade is infamous. Wonder if they'll be talking much about Howe's big run to the Champions League after a quarter century.
