Claudius Was it having to overhaul the entire roster because it wasn’t built for any kind of possession football? Or doing this during a pandemic where the manager and players were getting sick, scouting came to halt and scouts needed to be fired? And being the spokesperson to ask players take an unprecedented pay cut when revenues tanked? All on your first job?
It was getting to overhaul the entire roster due to very willing and supportive owners, getting to finish 8th in the Premier League and not get sacked, getting to dispense with Aubameyang with full support, etc. Arteta inherited a club already in the middle of a difficult transition, and he's been given time to succeed.
It's always a harder job to take on the management of a club that's riding higher. Look at how easy Postecoglou's had it at Spurs so far, when the only way was up. If Klopp goes out the way he seems to plan, Liverpool will be top two or three in the league, potentially its winners, potentially with a couple of other trophies under their belt. Alonso or any other incoming manager will have to perform.
When you add on a move from the Bundesliga to this extremely competitive league, it's a tough task and many things can go wrong—that's all I'm saying.
Alonso and Arteta have very, very similar pedigrees in football of course. I'd rather like to see Alonso managing in our league, as I think they would have a fascinating rivalry.
