Yeah, the interesting thing now is just the classification of all these players versus their skillset. Life has gotten harder for the old school type of fullbacks who are pretty much physically robust, marginally technically frustrated wingers ... and even harder for centre halves who aren't any good on the ball.

yep, that's everything that's wrong, and pretty much aligns with what I've been saying. arteta is obsessed with the 1st phase of build up. final third patterns really are an after thought, as all the choreo goes into the first phase of pulling the opps out of position, then the final third just takes care of itself with the calibre players we have. unfortunately for arteta, he's spent 170m to make our first phase build up worse, and the knock on effects have cratered our attack completely. don't really see how this gets fixed with the personnel we have, outside of rice doing a xhaka impersonation and partey playing as a pivot

High percentage possession combined with low xG confirms pretty much what we all can see with our own eyes. We play garbage football atm.

What we really need is a clone of Rice who's better at passing than ball-carrying, then we'd be set.

Has been a terrible start to the season so far, position in the table notwithstanding. Maybe I feel worse, given Sp*rs are where they are, but it does feel like a very disjointed team and a playing style that is worse than last year.

Burnwinter I think the issue is that he spent £170m on the midfield and got the balance wrong. Rice is obviously a top player and has performed for us but he has his strengths and weaknesses like everyone else and Arteta hasn't found the way to balance those. Partey plays like a modern continental/Spanish 6, he makes little short dribbles out of pressure and plays a good forward pass, its what Rodri does and its basically the Busquets template of how to play DM. Rice isn't that player, he doesn't have that pass from deep, when he bursts past someone its with power and he likes to keep going. He's got a good technical level but at his core he plays like a British midfielder. And all thats fine, it works and it can be absolutely brilliant for us. We need the other thing as well though, we need the build up. It made sense that we wanted Caicedo in January because at Brighton he did exactly what we need, his forms not as good at Chelsea but they are a dogshit team who drag everyone down. What I don't get is how Arteta went from seemingly wanting Caicedo and being linked with the likes of Zubimendi, etc and then thought you know what, the way to make this work is to get Kai Havertz. Its just doesn't add up for me and I get the feeling he was distracted by his positional flexibility and having the ability to switch him to a big man up top when needed, etc

We spent £65m on a not very good 8 when we should have bought a 6 and let Rice play 8.

didnt really intend it as a dig at Dec, who I like alot as a player. it's moreso aimed arteta knowing so much about his players and what worked well last season, knowing how obbssesive he is about first phase build up, yet proceeding to make the recruitment choices he did. I was panicking about playing rice at 6 from the moment we were linked. the flaws were glaring to me. it's like arteta felt the combined impact of raya, rice and timber would somehow equate to or improve upon the first phase build up we saw last season

Gazza M Think Tet thought Timber would solve a problem by doing some of what Zinchenko did on the ball without being a willo-wisp defensively. Fair enough because Zinchenko ended up a big problem for us in the 22–23 run-in.

Timber & Partey injuries have really fucked up a lot of our plans this season. Not having a top class CM alongside Rice is causing all sort of issues in our play.

We need to keep in touch by January and hopefully second half of the season have a more complete squad for the run in.

I am not convinced of collective, systemic issues or skew towards a shite style. Early days, but I actually rate what foundational play Arteta is looking to establish in this side (see the first line graph pulled up in that Tifo vid, or just comparing xG against us 23/24 vs 22/23.) We have 1-2 extra passengers and the moment our left-side 8 and forward start clicking, the complexion drastically changes. Plus benching Zinchenko. Too much on Ødegaard at the moment, whilst for the 100th time giving Zinchenko the keys to the team is dumb; he's offering no creative and progressive passing threat as everyone else pushes up and it compounds when runners stop moving and staring at him.

Agree with that perspective @Qwiss. It's shades of the same thing in many ways.

Reckon we blanched at the cost of 6s last summer and squibbed it, when we should have shifted Partey and gone big.

Fixation on an ideal 6-8-8 triangle is a problem, it's becoming the return of "specificity".

For example:

Rice is a brilliant midfielder in many many aspects, but we are talking about how he can't pick a line-splitting pass under pressure.

Meanwhile Ødegaard is a world class playmaker and we're talking about him not getting on the ball enough.

I feel the pace of tactical innovation has been slow and the results poor of late.

Burnwinter this is true. I keep hoping one of the midfield options will come good, early in the season Vieira looked to be doing something but has returned to form, ESR looked set to break in and do something but returned to the injury table, Jorginho just isn't at this level any more and that leave Kai who looks exactly the same player he was at Chelsea. So in the absence of anyone stepping up the manager needs to figure something out.
