Ok someone tell me. We’re in the Arteta tactics thread. What are they? What are we trying to do?

Tam whatever it takes to make it all about Arteta - and it's working.

We favor possession, winning duels, and structure against counter attacks. In exchange, we have accepted (and been drilled into) a clear abandonment of the middle of the park and vertical (straight) passing.

We expect to win 1-0 or 2-1, and don't expect our central striker to score much. Instead, we are drilled to minutia to build xG across an array of situations -- corners, wide overloads, etc.

I doubt anyone enjoys this type of football, but I also know that Arteta - and many of us fans - were heavily scared by Wenger teams doing damn near the opposite and getting heavily exposed. So I'm biting my tongue and trying to let Arteta see us through a major trophy this year.

As I've said elsewhere, sometimes I wonder why I don't just step away until EFL/FA/CL finals and the final EPL games to watch us in a more binary way - win and it was worth it, lose and it wasn't.

Like @Gazza M said in the match thread. I don't know or mind as long as it gets us the wins and trophies by the end.

We have some serious offensive problems. I'm worried we're going to sputter across all fronts and my heart can only take so much.

Fix them in the summer but get me the wins for now

I don't think it's all by design, I think Rice and Zubimendi are a huge reason why we play so laterally. If we plopped Jorginho or Partey in that midfield - we'd be playing more vertically and through the centre under the same manager as we have done in the past. The football has evolved to reflect the quality of the midfielders we now have. The part by design which has contributed though is the lack of an inverted fullback and a false 9 to overload the centre - so that's exacerbated it.

JazzG that's what I was saying. We seem to play at the level of the opposition but do just enough to get over the line. Hope we can continue at the minimum and hopefully step up a gear.

We miss White hugely. Timber has been a rock defensively but a lot of Saka's issues are because he does not have the partnerships on the right he used to have with both White and Odegaard out of the team due to injury/being unfavoured. On the left we definitely need Calafiori. Hincapie has also been pretty good but our attack struggles with him in the side vs Cala.

I noticed today against Leverkusen whenever we went wide there was very little movement in the middle. We need to draw Gyokeres back out of the box so he can shoot from the edge, which means a midfielder making runs into the box while he slips out.

We need to get Havertz fit and put Gyokeres on the bench! He's been absolutely useless since that Spurs game.

Ideally need to get White playing more games, against top wingers play Timber but against weaker sides White's attacking threat is far greater than Timber's defensive security.

Dowman is too young to be starting imo, defo someone we should be trying to bring off the bench but I do get why Arteta is reluctant. He is really young.

The double pivot is one of the main problems. Rice and Zubimendi both play like DMs and get in each other’s way. Either Rice starts playing like an 8 again or one of them goes to the bench. This shit is unwatchable

Our football has tanked since we made this change and add Timber and Hincapie either side who can't create or progress the ball vertically either and it's completely hamstrung the attack - relative to how we used to play in the past.
