I think a big reason teams sit really deep against us (moreso than against City/Pool etc.) is because they still believe they can shut us out. It hasn't worked for them so far this season, but it did last season, so they’re sticking with it. If we keep beating low blocks with set-piece goals and tight 1–0/2–0 wins, they’ll eventually have to change their approach. But for the moment and based on the evidence from last season, sitting deep against us = a point (which for most teams in the league is a win).
From here, one of two things can happen:
- Our set-piece output tails off and their approach is justified, or
- We keep winning, and teams realise they have to change their approach
Let’s hope it’s the 2nd scenario that plays out as the season goes on but I reserve a slight concern, that we'll see the 1st scenario play out instead.
