Really poor half. Martinelli has been really awkward with his back to goal and Saka and Nelson have been pointless.

Vieira has been quite good.

Tactics

We don't play the ball early enough to our wingers (especially out to Nelson), ball usually goes through 100 stations before it reaches them

Tactics Yeah, was expecting more expansive ball progression from Kiwior. Nelson is making a lot of runs and causing a lot of problems for Sporting but isn't being fully exploited as he's not getting enough of the ball.

Maybe also requires a Jorginho taking a more assertive role, although I think he's been tidy.

Would consider taking Martinelli off for ESR, our attack is breaking down wherever it gets to him and when he goes deep he doesn't end up progressing the ball.

If we're really going for it, might consider putting Partey on too. Not so much a slight on Jorginho but think we could benefit from his ball-carrying ability.

Have to say I'm not a fan of Martinelli as CF in this set up. Would maybe play ESR up top

Very disjointed half and it could easily be 2-1 for either team.

Nelson is being ignored by Kiwior who may be under instruction to keep it very simple. Regardless, we are overly favoring the right flank and not building well via the central (Martinelli).

Really poor half. We could do with another senior player or 2 on. Maybe Gabriel and Partey.

I have plenty of love and time for Martinelli, but he strikes me as a player that is losing his way.

He’s clearly not designed to play with his back to goal or to invite pressure (like Saka). At his best he’s receiving the ball and immediately pushing forward. But in Arteta’s system - whether at WF or CF - he’s killing the ball and it ruins his attacking drive.

MistaT he needs to get his head up a bit more. It's something I've been thinking too recently and whilst he's good with his feet, he's not always sharp enough with his decision-making on the ball. If he was scanning the pitch more, it might give him the extra time he needs to make the right decision. That being said, he's still adding more to this setup than Auba did, which is no mean feat so not sure he's a lost cause.

this is why in my opinion he's 4+ years from moving to the centre. However, this a first good developmental opportunity for him and I don't hold high expectations. Even for the team more broadly. A draw here would be fantastic for an injury hit squad.
