Then again signs for him are not good seeing how Arteta hardly rotates starters in so can't blame him if he chose to focus on a guaranteed starting spot like you mentioned elsewhere

It's a tough one for him. You could leave for the potential promise of regular starts but probably the only way is down from here, he's not going to join or play for a title contender again anytime soon.

I actually think he'll stay though, everything we've seen about Nelson suggests he's a kid that likes his home comforts.

As he mentioned in an interview earlier this season, Nelson's been an Arsenal boy since age 9, fifteen years. He said he didn't want to leave, he thought he'd grown up a bit, and he was greatly encouraged by the possibility he might stay. Home comforts, well it's not just geography, Arsenal's raised him.

RocktheCasbah if you were looking to sign realistic cover for Saka, you'd probably be looking for someone not too dissimilar to Reiss Nelson. Yet, Arteta has him and for all the warm, fuzzy words he has for him, he hasn't trusted him to deputise too often/ at all.

Lets be honest here, we rate Nelson because we are Arsenal fans and he's shown glimpses throughout his career but if he was a Liverpool and leaving on a free having the same track record in terms of his minutes, loans, etc would you really be wanting to sign him as Sakas rotation cover? I don't think you would.

He's a nice bit of squad depth for us but Arteta has shown he doesn't really trust him so he'd be mad to stay here. He's the best he's ever looked but he needs to go somewhere and show it consistently. If he stays here getting limited minutes he'll never reach his potential.

Qwiss I guess I was thinking more that it's super unlikely you're gonna get someone as good as Saka to cover for him - and even if you could, how much would he cost? So you have to accept you're gonna sign someone who's not as good, but can do a job - and Reiss Nelson has shown, admittedly in patches - that he can do a job. But yeah, I take your point and probably wouldn't want us to sign him, but that's not the position we're in.

I don't think he should stay, for the reasons I outlined above, but I can see why the club would want to keep him.

EDIT: Although, I do think Edu needs to have a frank conversation with Arteta and ask how much he is actually going to use him, otherwise we will end up in an Ainsley Maitland-Niles situation.

Very much agree with Qwiss he's been an interesting roll of the dice in some of those chaotic last minute chase for winners but I don't think he's good enough to be starting matches for us he just doesn't have a lot of the necessary attributes. The Brighton game showed some of the limits of that when there was a little bit of a battle in midfield he didn't have the quality and made some poor challenges trying to make something happen.

We need a viable alternative that we are conformable could play from the start and has enough quality not too create a drag on the team where they are likely to play and I don't think that's Nelson for me.

Looking at the mins played, if we can manage Saka fatigue better next season when Arteta learns Nelson probably can get alot of game time

Quite distorted. Looking at the stats City seem to have have eight outfield players within about 200 of Saka's minutes played if you go across all competitions.

Burnwinter Nah, just need to compare the wingers because the intensity of attackers and defenders are different. When wingers lose that sharpness and explosivity in short burst they are nowhere near as effective.

Don't forget Southgate used Saka extensively too compared to someone like Grealish.

Article also says Saka made 78 consecutive apps since last year without any rest. Shows Arteta's blindspot.

Once you include all competitions, two of the four City wingers mentioned in that tweet have played about 95% of Saka's minutes. So it was a bit skewed.

Yeah. Were in trouble if Nelson is our 3rd choice next season. Think people maybe underestimating what the step up to the CL entails if we really want to compete... No more second string games... I'm not completely against keeping him as he is a hale ender but not as a 3rd choice (suspect that may be part of the issue with negotiations), we are going to need someone to come in and really push Saka and Martinelli, alternating the front line without any significant drop in quality.. We have been really lucky with them not getting injuries as well.. his alternatives as well are not at that level/yet.

And Saka is 21, he's not physically at the age where he should be playing those minutes. I get that its hard to drop him but you have to make the hard decisions some times. No doubt he's looked fatigued in recent weeks.

Don't think it does, fair play. However all those players have still had really full seasons, with the exception of Foden but even he's played plenty. The original tweet implied Saka was playing twice as many minutes as City's wingers and that is far from true.

Anyway to me it's clear our current issues aren't solely down to condition, even if it's not the worst diagnosis as the rational prescription would be to strengthen the squad dramatically.

We’re over engineering the whole minutes discussion. Saka ultimately hasn’t been playing well for 2 months or so and, even if he keeps his place in the starting 11, should certainly not be finishing games on current form.

Whether it’s because he’s been overplayed or carrying a knock or just doesn’t fancy it anymore is by the by

Burnwinter not solely, nothing alone is the issue but I do think we look tired. Arteta had them hyped up to run through it for a long time but when the nerves and then disappointment set in I think those legs started feeling a lot heavier.
