Don't think anyone is underrating Nelson today! I'm not. Was just re-watching the replay of that goal, and to me Nelson seems to square it with great technique, at a very appealing pace and height, but the cross skips a couple of potential "better" options especially Øde before it reaches White.

Burnwinter Yeah maybe, but there were a few other situations where he picks someone out, including a good one for Ode. The main point is though if you watch him when he came on his play had urgency but wasn't frenetic. Everything had thought behind it.

That goal of his was 0,03 xG for what it's worth. And I'm not saying that to make him sound lucky, but to point out how good a finish was needed to score from that position.

Even if (ha, "if"...) you take out the precision he needed from the edge of the box to pick out the bottom corner and beat the keeper, how he managed to bisect at least two Bournemouth defenders in that crowded box is kinda... well, miraculous really.

In saying what I'm saying above, I'm sort of acknowledging Nelson's substitute performance declared "I want to start". Once you get to that point, it's not about moments, it's about what to expect versus the other contenders for that spot: Martinelli, Trossard, Smith Rowe … that is not a shabby list.

His time at the club looked like it was fizzling away but he has looked a different player this season. So much more assured and smarter on the ball.

Hope he can stay fit now until the end of the season as I think he definitely has a role to play for us.

goon Main reason he made the difference on Sat was because unlike everyone else, he kept a cool head. Got into good positions and make the right decisions, actually picked someone out.

He was very aggressive in his running too. The others seemed to prioritise ball retention too much.

of all the players I saw on the live tour of Australia in 2017, the one who left the biggest impression was Nelson. I was so sure he had next. he looked electric and confident. it's since come to light there were some off the pitch factors that derailed his development. id be delighted if he could find his way back. he's looked very handy in his cameos under arteta

What off the field issues has he had other than injuries?

Think there was a fair amount of stuff about him not properly applying himself whilst at Hoffenheim, which is why Nagelsmann dropped him. Generally, I think there was a perception that he maybe wasn't disciplined enough off the field but can't recall exact details.

It could be that he just doesn't enjoy being abroad/away from what he considers home. Even when he was stuck on our bench without minutes he'd rather be here than go on loan. Obviously a lack of ambition is the first thing to come to mind, but there are other potential answers.

It's maybe just a case of maturing with age that sparked a change in Nelson. Not everyone has a desire to be the best or the drive to put in their all everyday. In football as much as anywhere else there will be plenty of guys (and women) who are happy to coast along and make the most of what they can in their career without demanding too much of themselves. And maybe for some, their perspective changes as they get older.

So many intangibles around personality and mentality that could have been a factor in the change we've seen in him. I've said before that I completely thought he was done here but he's made me rethink that. Maitland-Niles on the other hand....

I never got the impression Nelson was coasting at any point. He's always seemed really determined to me and always singularly focussed on making it at Arsenal. The main shift that I see from him is that he's much braver and more decisive on the ball. Its like something clicked for him psychologically. I don't know if thats an age thing, something he's worked on with someone personally or something to do with the club/Arteta or even someone he talked to on one of his loans. He seems completely different in his level of confidence now though. Its like he has a plan when he gets the ball now but he didn't 2 years ago.

I'm tempted to say we should keep him and see if he can go up another level. We're fairly well stacked in his position now so theres decent competition for him and it could save us needing to invest there in the summer.

Not being clever after the fact (I have podcast evidence to prove it), but I was always baffled by how - on one hand, I could be listening to the Arsecast Extra and listen to James and Andrew dismissing Nelson's chances out of hand whilst simultaneously bemoaning our lack of depth on the wing. Arteta has always been very explicit about how highly he regards Reiss, it was just a case of Nelson being able to put it together.

If you take it as extremely unlikely you're going to be able to find another winger like Bukayo Saka to come and provide cover for him, then that leaves you with someone like Reiss Nelson. In a way, it makes more sense having him as cover (for either flank) than it would have to sign Mudryk for £100m and then have to choose between him and Martinelli every week.

Yeah I agree. Especially with how Arteta doesn't like to rest key players much. You wont get new top class talent to back up Saka. If you let Nelson go you are probably looking for a similar type with similar potential anyway. Why complicate things?

I'm happy he is getting some recognition.. Not quite on board that we should keep him. Hopefully will get more games in next few months and see how he does.

Depends also what our priorities are in the summer. WC midfielder is top of the list for me. followed probably by a winger... if we can bring someone in of really quality to challenge our starters then I'd wait until the summer to see our options

We've got Saka, Martinelli, Trossard, Smith Rowe, Nelson and even Gabriel Jesus could play wide at a push. A winger would be an absolute luxury purchase for me.

Even if you're selling Nelson, we have 4 excellent options in those positions. What problem are you trying to solve by spending money on a winger good enough to compete with the two incumbents? I think I'm right in saying also that we have at least a couple of very exciting prospects burning a path through Hale End - it'd be nice to think that these guys aren't going to be blocked unnecessarily.
