We had Higuaín all the way on the hook for a fee that would've let us spend elsewhere too. I get pursuing Suárez instead, but having abandoned Higuáin, the stakes were raised and we should've been far more decisive. The matter of the release clause was very confusing, though, and to this day I still don't know if we were lied to about it or just incompetent.
Does anyone? I remember chatting shit about that £40m+1 for months, it was the kind of move you make if you know you've won, but then we lost.
Every time we splashed on a player later, it felt like reparations to the fans for the scars of that summer, when the club (and presumably Wenger) fucked up every hand we got dealt.
