I don't get that logic. If we're heading towards 0-0 (which I doubt many people would have agreed with on 23 minutes anyway) then surely we're in with an even better chance of nicking a goal and winning the game? And Tomiyasu's error made that more difficult. You're looking to excuse the impact of his mistake because he's a favourite of yours. It's not rusty to play a no look backpass across a fairly considerable distance against an intense pressing team, it's negligent and cost us.

Tam I am saying we lost the game in the 2nd half mainly, not because his mistake cost us "massively". It was a very bad mistake of course, but the real impact on the game the way it unfolded is debatable.

Have you seen him playing that kind of pass last year when he was sharp? It was a nervous panicky mistake from someone that's rusty.

Arteta himself says he never seen Tomi make such a mistake in 7 years.

Tam yeah it was a real school boy error. When I watched the replay back I could hear all my junior coaches screaming to just knock it out for a throw!
I guess when you try to obsessively instil possession football, this is the kind of shit that can happen on occasion.

I'd been thinking about a 3-5-2, but it feels like it depletes our biggest threat (Saka high up the pitch) to sneak in another forward. So for me, any new formation needs to maintain Saka's role while adding something to help us find more goals and stabilize an increasingly (albeit by fine margins) shaky defense.

On the back of the Man City performance, I also think Arteta needs to show some ruthlessness for at least two of Xhaka, Tomiyasu, and Martinelli....and I would almost include Zinchenko in that. In fact, against a very athletic and counter attacking Villa it may be a good time to test Tierney.

Clrnc There is a lot going wrong in that clip, our CBs aren't paying attention to KDB, Ramsdale is in no mans land and then of course the pass back.

Tomi should be taking a touch there but obviously can feel Grealish breathing down his neck

Yeah there's probably a better way of putting this, but for me that situation is a clear example of where you need the player's independent decision making to kick in (ie recognise the danger in the specific situation and kick it out of play), even though this might go against the more general tactical instruction/coaching emphasising retaining possession

Terrible pass too now that I look at it again. Should never be putting it either towards or across the goal, or pushing it central from those positions. Always outside the posts and down the line to keep it away from the danger area.

Not far from it, but I don't think White plays exactly like a CB. I also think Zinchenko has more to offer higher in the pitch than what Xhaka has.
