He doesn't have the technical ability. That's why I've talked about Smith Rowe replacing him in games like this. Xhaka thrives when we can force quick transitions, and when there's more space in the area in front of the box.

It's definitely the best current tactic for giving us a game. Most teams try it tbf, but not that many sides have the players to play it effectively. Newcastle, Everton and Brentford are definitely three of them. Man United did it reasonably well, too.

He could, but Arteta doesn't seem comfortable taking Xhaka off - which I can understand.

Martinelli has a similar problem to Xhaka, in that he just doesn't fare well in tight spaces, but absolutely thrives in quick transitions.

I think Trossard for Martinelli is the sub. I think we should have started that way actually.

It's a shame Vieira is still not up to it, otherwise I'd have him on for Xhaka, too.

Really poor first half from us and very lucky not to be behind. We are coming up against teams who can minimise are threats, keep the wings quiet and no thread in the middle. Arteta has to find something different you can't just okay the same tactics.

Only good thing about the half is that it's 0-0. They should be up by 2 easy. They defend like crazy, we have no space and no time on the ball, and they are happy to let us pass it about. The thing is I don't know what we can change, maybe Martinelli at CF? No idea, but playing like this we will never get a goal even if we play for 2 days, and I really think we need 2 here as they will score. The duo up front just man handled us, made us look weak. Yeah and Eddie has been so bad, we need much more form him

It's OK if we can manage things just 5% better in the 2nd half. Saliba could use some support against Toney, and we need to simply shoot more and shoot better.

happy with 0-0 at this stage. feels like arteta is the emotional leader of this team and given that they follow his orders to the letter, they would rely on him heavily for inspiration at times like this
