Pepe LeFrits Lokonga leaving makes no sense to me though. Who is the Xhaka back-up if he goes? Arteta clearly wants 2 players for every position.

James Unfortunately buying rejects from competition will bring about the jeers, regardless of the circumstances. It's part of the game. As far as rebuilding this entire club goes, let's wait for more than half a good season to declare that we are back competing for titles. We are yet to extend Saka and Saliba and as much as we may like to think they will be around for ten years, we don't know what their plans are.

Lol, you're defending this as if our need for a Partey backup was something that arose January 25th or whenever our first bid came through. It's been going on since the summer. Elneny getting injured shouldn't be the thing that makes us suddenly bid 70m for players, we should do it regardless. You should calm down, yourself.

Have another read through the thread and see who’s the calm one.

I would say our desperation started the moment Elneny picked up a season ending injury. Otherwise, we could’ve held out til the summer. The club tried to think long term, it’s not available right now.

goon It is desperation, I think bidding for the younger guys was also out of desperation. The lesson here should be to get as much done in the summer as possible to avoid having to do business in Jan. We should have gotten at least one out of the two positions sorted back then and it would have at least made this window more managable.

Most January signings are desperation tbh (I'd say Kiwior is an exception).

Yep, was my biggest concern. 1.5 year is a good deal. Lifts the burden of Partey to deputise is easy/europe games.

I get the disappointment but the market is fucked and we have decided to go all in on the short term with Trossard and Jorginho which I cant blame them considering the position we find ourselves in.. Think there is something to be said for not rocking the boat too much of a high performing / (potential) title winning team

I understand that, but Rome wasn’t built in a day either. I’m struggling to find any reason to criticise the men that brought in Jesus, Zinchenko, and integrated Saliba back into the side last Summer.

The club will clearly target a long term option this Summer. We’ll have another 12 months of Jorginho as cover/rotation. Then we move on.

James Like I said though, with Danilo moving for less than 20m and low wage, really no excuse for us leaving it so late till we are left with old Jorginho on high wage. Unless we are misled by Brighton to go for Caicedo (which made us give up Danilo) and then they play us out.

The CM Partey cover issue has been there for about 5 windows now which makes up the main frustration for gooners here and social media.

Pepe LeFrits peak stat cherry picking. he's not a poor player by any means though. still good enough to steer a Europa League midfield, which i hope is the most we use him for. don't really want him starting league games

There is no need for us to get Danilo. It is not good use of resources to have Danilo and Lokonga - they’re both raw and need tons of time to develop, which they won’t get here. Caicedo is already ready.

As a downside risk management plan, Jorginho works. This will be £20-25m total we spend on an experienced guy who can reliably fill in for Partey and play our game. We can then make the £100m+ big bets with massive upside in the summer when the market is much more liquid and we have better negotiating leverage.

Other than being another Chelsea surplus, my problem is I don't think he is defensively good enough. He lacks the intensity in the press and will make us porous. I don't mind us getting in experience even on a longer contract. I don't see him as a good Partey substitute.
