Was pretty certain it will be rejected. Brighton are hard negotiators and they hold all the power here despite the player acting up.

maybe we try a bit of deadline day poker to really test their resolve, but it's a pretty risky strategy

I find the idea that any of us nobodies on OMITT would have insight into how the negotiations work very odd. I'd be delighted to hear who you think we should sign instead.

GooneriC he could displace either within a year. You'll regret only having Berge on the bench when Partey comes off injured midweek against Bayern and we have City on the weekend.

I feel we should be looking at other options , not allowing teams like Brighton to rip us off because Chelsea and the likes of United have the market distorted . A big no to spending 70 million on Caicedo , Brighton can do one. If anything the Cucurella transfer to Chelsea should raise a massive question mark.

GooneriC I want us to win a title, and then the CL, and then do it again. If we hobble over the line in 2nd and subsequently fail to seriously improve the team, we'll lose our best players and have to start again. We've seen that movie before.

If you want to be the best, you have to spend like the best. If you're happy with a title challenge every 20 years, then by all means, keep advocating that we don't get "ripped off."

There's nothing moral in being thrifty when you don't actually need to be. It's just penny wise and pound foolish.

Edit: it's actually immoral to be thrifty, as all it results in is a higher asset value for an American Sheikh who'll just donate more money to the RNC while not winning titles. Spend the fucking money.

RowJimmy What does this even mean? What should we talk about here, if anything at all? No matter what if we think a sub is wrong, no matter if we think Lokonga is a waste of money or that Maguire is a bad footballer, we're just 'nobodies' compared to the people who bought Maguire for a record sum.

Agree with this.. It’s hard to gauge how much effort is being put in based on what a Fabrizio reports. Is it a couple of calls from club agents? Or do we already have a room set up with agents, analysts, accountants, lawyers etc trying to bang this out full time.

QuincyAbeyie Those are all things I'm interested in everyone and anyone's opinions about. Because it's judgments about what we watch. I'm particularly interested if people who think Caicedo is too expensive have opinions about other options.
What I find strange is opinions about what might have gone wrong in negotiations. It's totally opaque to us.

RowJimmy literally everything on this forum is speculation and commentary based on public information past and present. all the goings on inside the club on are 'opaque'. we have a similar situation developing to what we've seen in the past close to deadline day, hence my about comment about operating more intelligently. 'well you go scout better players then' has always been a strange thing to say on a discussion forum.

anyway, I've seen this argument heaps of times in the past and cant be arsed going down this rabbit hole.

What we do know is that when we bid for a player, it gets out. And another thing we know is that it's January 30th and that if we don't get a midfielder in, we didn't bid for one until late this month. Elneny and Lokonga aren't exactly at the level where we have to ask ourselves "well, who could we realistically sign to replace them?".

QuincyAbeyie I wonder if Brighton is playing hardball or if this is it, because the Arsenal I know won't go up to 80m, otherwise we wouldn't have missed almost all of Arteta's first choices. In fact I don't think we have actually gotten a single player that was initially what we wanted lol.

@Clrnc odegaard, jesus and white were first choice deals which we got done. the backup options have generally turned out pretty good at least e.g. zinchenko, trossard. at the same time we did miss out on quite a few top targets as well (vlahovic, raphinha, mudryk). shopping at the top end of the market while remaining responsible is easier said than done. I always wonder if the rando buys like vieira/kiwior impact the overall budget and cause us to come up short with key targets like mudryk and caicedo, or if its purely a case of us being strict on our own valuation of players and we won't go beyond it

Gazza M I think our first choice striker was Vlahovic. Although it happened in a different window I doubt we will sign Jesus if we gotten him

White was definitely not first choice. Was Kounde or Tapsoba as widely reported.

I think it's pretty clear money is no issue for us. Just look at the overall spending since Arteta took over, he is backed the maximum then we can go and then some. Remember at the start some of us are critical about White, Pepe fees etc because we were afraid it will impact the next window but it has proved not to be the case. We just keep having new funds to spend even though we sell badly and recoup close to nothing. I do think we have a stubborn maximum valuation for every player though and don't want to look like mugs like Chelsea.
