there's not much to dislike about this signing. top talent in great form, plenty of scope to be moulded into whatever the team needs, stepping into perfect conditions. minor niggles about playing style and ideal fit will fade away pretty quickly. him, partey and odegard would be a bloody handful. salary also won't be crazy so we can probably pay Brighton what they want in fees

All this stuff about how "he can be elite in the 8, but also superb cover in the 6" … I dunno. The things that are the most encouraging are that he's 21, developing fast with immense potential and most of all he seems to have a great mentality.

Not sure about midfield unicorns, but I do believe Arteta does much better with players who are notably focused or even emotionally damaged—just look at what Xhaka's doing.

Really satisfying that we're continuing to challenge for signings that might shake up the first XI.

When you make statements like he did it can backfire, Brighton aren't under any pressure to sell and they know they'll get at least the same amount in the summer.

It just now depends on the view they take, whether they want to keep an unhappy player on the books.

There's no guarantee of that all, if his form dips significantly I find it hard to see anyone shelling out £60m+ for him in the summer. He has less than a year of senior football under his belt; adding a few months of bad form in to that will massively colour perceptions of him amongst suitors. This is why it's risky to hold on to players who don't want to be there.

I haven't paid enough attention to him to have a real opinion on him, but surely he's much better than Lokonga and that is enough for me. We desperately need someone who can come in and relieve Partey from time to time, without the entire midfield going to shit.

I think you have to be very careful how you handle situations like this if you're a club like Brighton. You're always a stepping stone so you dont want to scare off future signings by sitting someone for half a season.

Pepe LeFrits Think his form will be fine, he'll get over it and will be eyeing up his mega move in the summer. He'll know he will need to keep up his performances for that. If he had fallen out with the coach then he might have been frozen out like Trossard was.

He has the chance of winning the League, playing in Europe and with a chance of winning that, too. And for a team that is maybe the best in Europe right now - certainly one of the most fun, cool and also well run clubs around.

He'd me mental not to go, and even push hard if he has any ambition at all. As much as it was sad when our best left for Barcelona, how could you really knock them for it?

I think if they can get a replacement they will be ok to let him leave.

I remember it was the same with White. They didn't want to entertain any offers but we overpaid massively and they were ok to let him go. Same with Cucurella.

Part of the calculus has to be maintaining a reputation to the young, in-demand players they persuade to sign that they're not only a great environment to showcase their talent, but also that they will play fair when the player has a chance to make a huge step up.

Obviously, this is mid-season for them, but it's not like they can't go out and get a midfielder that can do a job for them for the rest of the season. If a club offers you £65m for a player you paid peanuts for and the he's doing everything in his power to make it happen, then the right decision is surely to sell.

If that is the case then move on, no point wasting more time on this.

Call their bluff and bid again or quickly look elsewhere, we haven't got much time to get anything else sorted.

Understandable on their part, though it is underestimating their business model and system. All the evidence points to their setup being sustainable and buying low and selling high is what has enabled them to get where they are. There's no reason they couldn't wisely invest the Caicedo money and continue to progress. If Caicedo really is that important to them, then forcing him to stay is extremely risky in itself as any downturn in his form would hit them hard. The sensible move would be to quietly line up his replacement(s) while maintaining a publicly defiant stance (for the fans) and engaging with buyers (us/Chelsea).
