Qwiss always felt like we haven’t bought well from within the league. Ferguson and United used to do it well back in the day. If you look below their top players and/or signings, Ferguson made good use of Premier League signings in the squad. The likes of Antonia Valencia, Ashley Young, Dimitar Berbatov, Alan Smith, Michael Carrick, Van Der Sar, even arguably the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling. I’m not suggesting we should have bought them, but to a good degree they were all key players for United at times.
It’s not quite the same these days with better value found abroad, but my broad point is we have rarely looked to potential in the league as part of our squad building. I don’t like the tired old cliche of taking Chelsea’s cast offs but there is a degree of truth in it when you look at the PL signings we’ve made over the years.
It doesn’t always need to be superstars. We don’t have enough superstars in the squad that we can be picky about where we want them.
