This club really needs to adjust its business practices. Contract renewals should not be rewards. It's all well and good to treat people well, but none of these cats need the money and the fans are the ones left holding the bag.

Depends on his wages and the exact contract. With any luck it's not far north of £200k / week and only for three years …

Trossard's been out of form and might be in decline, but I'd argue he hasn't been anything like as unproductive as Jesus, who seems to be simply useless these days.

He's missed high profile chances recently, but he's still our best finisher. He's 30 this year, and is probably extended for two more. There's still value in there. Who knows what the new salary package looks like? It's likely competitive with folks in his role (impact sub/ back up) in other top level teams in England. There's probably a wage structure and I don't think we would be breaking it for him, more like rewarding him for his performances in the past year. I'm cool with it.

But I'm sure someone will soon imply that this is the reason why we won't sign Gyokeres/Isak...

flobaba yeah, don't know what wage he's on but suspect he's a fair bit lower than his contemporaries in the squad so more about putting him at parity.

And as you say, let's keep him going whilst he's still a useful squad option (which he is) and we're able to replace him (which I fully expect given how ruthless Arteta is willing to be).

Yeah I'm not so sure those who imply reasons for us not signing Gyokeres/Isak are not blaming it on a Trossard contract renewal. Now are they (we?) blaming it on buying more defenders, goalkeepers and defensive midfielders and potentially eating up the available budget? Yeah, probably. Blaming it on an Arteta not making buying attacking players a priority even if we have money to buy both? Also probably yeah. But giving Trossard a contract, probably not.

To be fair, there were a few who said that about Eddie and Nelson, and in at least one of those cases it paid off - probably will with Nelson too.

Of course, those guys were young and about to leave on a free. Trossard is 30 and has 18 months left to run. I'd be amazed if the story is true. I think Trossard is the perfect candidate for cashing in while stock is high and still young enough to be attractive to a few clubs.

Burnwinter Trossard is on around £90K according to the internet. If we want him to stay £120k should be our top offer. He wont get a better offer elsewhere in 18 months time. If he can get one now it comes with a fee for us. We need to play a bit of hard ball.

I think its a mistake to keep him. I think he was an excellent signing and he's been really good for us but he's 30 and not good enough to justify keeping IMO. He had a very hot run last season and we'd be better off using that to cash in.

goon agree. If a decent fee comes in next 2 transfer windows, you sell. Trosssard, Tomi, Jesus, Zinchenko, Kiwior. Monetize.

That said, having more time on his contract could be better for both parties, including in a transfer

It's time to invest in younger players, hot talents. Like Paez, Endrick, Estevao kind of talents

Main thing is the contract shouldn't be too long or on an outrageous wage that prevents us ever flipping him. I suspect Edu's fucked off because he knew he'd never sell Jesus or one or two others, so he knew his reputation had already peaked as far as his work at Arsenal was concerned.

Let's take a pause though and acknowledge that Trossard has actually been a brilliant, even revelatory signing despite recent poor form. He's exceeded all expectations.

I still don't think Trossard is a bad player but he's just not a good enough player to hold onto at his age. He's taking a squad space that Arteta wont fill while he's still here so he needs to go. While Trossard is available on the left wing Arteta will keep buying defenders and duel winning midfielders.

He was a very astute signing but not a long term one and we need to be just as astute when it comes to letting him go.

I'd stand by this:

Remembering that we're talking about a situation in which Martinelli is sold and upgraded. If we brought in a first team forward I'd reconsider.

Our real millstone is in no way Trossard it's Jesus. Enough said there. Jesus seems to offer nothing to us with high overheads.

Trossard will never be particularly effective as a starter due to his age and lesser athleticism, but he's been extremely good as a substitute in the broken phases of play at the ends of matches since he came here. He will be again this season I reckon.

Now, move Trossard on if you can replace him some other way or with a second good quality signing, but the regrettable truth is that the player who looks like he must be supplanted in our squad is the left-sided starting forward, Martinelli.

Thing is, Martinelli is not a guy we're gonna convert into a game-changing supersub. Trossard already is that guy. Martinelli's elite attributes today are his engine, work rate and adherence to tactical instructions, but definitely not his end product. If Martinelli stops starting, then he's gotta be transferred out because I don't see him improving in usefulness or transfer value on the bench.

Was atrocious v Fulham, and he and Jebus did once the same thing probably would put them in Mikel's bad books. They both just left a ball that was theirs to take. It happened only once each but was glaring beyond belief.
