It was only a hypothetical.

My best guess would be Rice would love to come to Arsenal, and has had it set in his head for 6 months, but it's unlikely he wouldn't have had City in his mind (and ear) all the way along, too. And now they've mad ether interest public and concrete, it's even more for him to think about.

Still quite confident it's all set just right for him here, and that he knows it.

As much as I'd find it absolutely gutting if City were to sign Rice, I can't help but also think how great it is that we're back at the front of the queue competing to sign the marquee player of this summer. It's been a long time since we would have been in the conversation.

He's the player that the two best teams in (by far) the best league in the world are going head-to-head to sign.

He's the best player who's on the move this summer, imo. Mbappé and a few others could change that, but in terms of the Premier League, this almost certainly will be the signing of the summer.

I beg to differ. This is a top top level player, and his stats and performances bear this out. He is the Lampard/Gerard of our generation. Declan Rice is about as good a central midfielder as we can get, so we should get him.

Across Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga Serie A, and Ligue 1, there are over 2000 players prying their trade at the top level. Rice is probably in the top 5% of that group, which is where we should be playing transfer wise.

The top 1% of that group, which is 20 elite players like KDB, Messi, Mbappe, Vini - those players rarely move and when they have moved/re-signed recently we have seen ridiculous costs. Haaland is probably around £300m all in for City, and Mbappe is on similar cost from his most recent extension. I don’t expect us to chase many of them. My hope is one of Rice; Saka, Martinelli, Odegaard or Saliba joins that gang.

Obviously, not in my view, but fair enough if that's your opnion.

Even if you do believe Gundogan is the best player on the move - I definitely do not - at 32 pushing 33, Declan Rice is the much more coveted player this summer.

Arsenal signing him would be quite the statement.

I don't agree with that, I think City are signing Kovacic to replace Gundogan and the move for Rice is purely because he's just too good a player to pass up. But my speculation is no more substantive than yours, so who knows?

seems like theres consensus from west ham sources (Steinberg, Ian Abrahams, ExWHU, southon) that he's willing to wait for us. KUMB forum is melting down too - they really hate arteta 😆

City coming in for him has definitely made it feel that way. If we do seal the deal it will be interesting to see what the narrative from pundits will be, beyond the inevitable ‘he should have gone to City’ bait.

Gazza M I took a good read at that forum and was shocked how much they hate us. To the point some of them are already calling Rice cunt, barely 3 weeks after he helped them win a European cup. And there are also many who said will never forgive him and he will be the most hated West Ham player, abuse him when he comes back to the London stadium in our colors.

Also interesting there are a few who doesn't think City interest is genuine, and that they tried to leak it out to encourage us to bid higher but Rice only wanting to come to us news countered that and their board is furious. Make sense, if City wanted him they would have moved long ago. They wanted Bellingham
