JazzG Wrighty could definitely have played in that fatal group game in Rotterdam. Graham Taylor played Carlton Palmer where the Merse should have been and Merse where Wrighty should have been.
But I heard Wrighty talking about his time with England a while ago and he said he spoke to Graham Taylor years later and asked him what his problem had been. Taylor said something like, I didn't have the problem - you had the problem. And Wrighty went, "Ahhhh, of course!"
It just never happened for him at international level, did it? I also remember a game against Norway where the Wrighty I knew would have had a hat trick, but I had to sit and watch through my hands as this impostor in Ian Wright's body wasted chance after chance after chance. Personally, I always felt he was trying a bit too hard and not playing naturally, but who knows?
