JazzG yeah but think of how funny it'll be watching United or Spurs being absolutely murdered in the Champions League next season. City struggled in it this year and they are miles better than those 2 almost relegation sides.

Mirth I get the whole you wouldn't trade this now etc but I think some of the argument is a little disingenuous. For one we were in that bad place as a team when some of these trophies were the only chance we had and we couldn't win. For the teams in those types of circumstances that is a very good outcome from a very bad place. Yes us being 2nd in the mix is great but if we never win any of the big trophies then that being second will be forgotten and for the other teams clearly winning trophies will become part of the history.

I agree. We all laughed at Sp*rs "putting the pressure on" Leicester in 2016. Our current "finished second thrice in a row" trophy is not too different. The Arteta hagiography is getting old fast.

Bernard Woolley we're not celebrating, are we? Just saying that dropping down so that we can compete in an easier competition without the best teams (EL/Championship) isn't preferable to not winning the CL/Premier League.

QuincyAbeyie Fully agree with the not dropping down bit. Was just agreeing with folks talking about the urgency of winning something vs always taking positives on incremental forward movement vs last year or the ghosts of Emery's distant past.

Mirth I more meant we've been in a similar bad place and not won stuff so that would be the thing that would be disappointing. And if we never win the league or champions league in this high point it would end up a better achievement.

Bernard Woolley the point is that we need to improve from where we are and win serious trophies. No one disagrees with that. Its the idea that winning the Europa League/Conference means you have been better than Arsenal this season (if we don't win the CL) is just fucking misery merchants and people who can't deal with banter.

Qwiss was on Twitter last night. Brain dead fans were laughing at us for having lost against PSG while United won and Spurs & Chelsea smashed teams I've never heard of before.

No doubt we have to win the league with this squad. We have to. There's equally no doubt United and Spurs will have no say in whether we do or not. So never mind them.

I would just never want to have the feeling Spurs and United fans have possibly had every other week in exchange for a Europa League trophy at the end of a season.

The only reason I wouldn't want Spurs to win it is because of the smugness with which Ange will be able to say "I always win a trophy in my second season season mate"

What I would say about the Europa League thing is that when there was a possibility of Spurs winning the CL 6 years ago, the thought was genuinely horrifying, especially given how we were doing at the time. Obviously, I don't want them to win the EL now, but is it gonna bother me if they do it? Not really. I can't see my neighbour launching a triumphant open top bus parade across the landing.

United win it? They were winning the actual Champions League not so long ago. Look how far they done fell.

And if all else fails, there's the Arseblog approach. What Europa League.

The EL just isn't the competition it was when we were in it. The lack of CL teams has rendered it a total joke. I'd rather lose a CL semi-final once every 3 years than with the EL every single year in the current format.
