We have to be aware and accept the above is very much real and would put us in a very bad light if we don’t win anything.

@Mirth you can mock all you want but these clubs didn’t choose to be in these tournaments this season but they are making the most of a bad situation.

Trophies is currency historically and for football bragging rights. No one cares if you finish 2nd 3 times in a row but have nothing to show for it.

Pretty much. We also didn't necessarily choose to be in the Europa the seasons we were, and we still couldn't win it no matter how much we turned our nose up and thought it was beneath us.

I can take your point on Newcastle winning the league cup or City winning the FA Cup. I can also take your point on Arsenal not pushing further for the title and let Liverpool win the league.

But using the Europa league or, worse the conference league, as a benchmark is nonsense when your own team is in the CL semi final. Would you actually swap seasons with those clubs? No player would. Neither would any manager.

It’s crying over a complete made up issue and if you’re getting stick from Spurs/United and Chelsea fans and can’t give it back then that’s on you.

-holding is shit
-man city are too good
-man city are shit but ref’s have robbed us
-let’s laugh at Man Utd and Spurs they have lost 50 games between them but one of them could have a trophy and be in CL next season which is net better than us if we don’t win CL this year

Downplay others achievements whilst making excuses for us not winning and always pretending (aka putting wool over your eyes) that we always have next year ie cope mechanism

The prize for winning the Europa League is qualification to the Champions League. It's a qualifier. That's why we wanted to win it, because we couldn't manage top 4.

Sicario2 He reminds me a bit of Alexis Sanchez in a way. He used to lose the ball all the time and many of those times it would cost us goal but he also delivered when it matters. Bruno is very much like that, always taking the most dangerous option which means a lower chance of success.

Mirth I get the whole you wouldn't trade this now etc but I think some of the argument is a little disingenuous. For one we were in that bad place as a team when some of these trophies were the only chance we had and we couldn't win. For the teams in those types of circumstances that is a very good outcome from a very bad place. Yes us being 2nd in the mix is great but if we never win any of the big trophies then that being second will be forgotten and for the other teams clearly winning trophies will become part of the history.

So they’re actually able to just go out and beat up on impoverished European clubs, but struggle to lift themselves in the more competitive premier league.

There’s basically about ₁₀ European clubs that can keep up with top premier league clubs. They’re all in champs league. Basically Madrid, Atletico, Barca, Dortmund, Bayern, Leverkusen, PSG, Juve, and Inter. The rest are in the financial gutter.

Oh absolutely, but what they don't have over Brentford and Wolves is 40 points in 34 league matches.

Zero point looking at United and Spurs except for the warm glow of consolation, because reading the whole manual for thrashing Bodø/Glimt isn't going to get us past PSG.

We on the other hand are in a competitive context that requires us to have a squad of high quality players who are able to make their mark in both Premier League and Champs League. So we need incredibly good players available for 50+ games.
It means you need significantly better players. Which we have. But even then. We are still short 1 or 2 forwards who can make a big difference.
