Having both options there with real quality players would be great.. Switching the type of player in the 8 role between a more attacking and defensive player Is a good way to shift the emphasis of the team without having to change the formation/tactics too much...

I do hope we see a lot more of Trossard playing 8 for the remainder of the season as think he could fill the more attacking role really well with a few tweaks... Then you can have Rice or Caciedo fill in when we need to shore up defensively (plus Xhaka).. I get people want both and that we should be splashing the cash in the summer but it is not going to be unlimited and I think I would rather prioritize a winger/striker and fullback first over a second CM.

Doc The idea that I am coming around on is that you get Rice and Caicedo with the understanding that Caicedo can also play at RB and invert like Zinchenko does on the left. I get that he hasn't really done that at Brighton but watching how he plays, it's not hard to imagine him being able to adapt to that role next year with some good tactical coaching in the beginning of the season. That is assuming that TP5 is still here at the end of the summer, which I think will be the case. If he gets moved for any reason, then clearly Caicedo would step in as the 6.

I think then you can look at another winger that can come in and play on either wing and push Saka/Martinelli. My pick would be Diaby. Then I think you still have flexibility to go after a younger project at fullback like Fresneda and also stay opportunistic in the market if an attractive target at either CF or CM pops up. To me, this would be very doable this summer but I still think it leaves us a tiny bit short of top quality depth in the attack and in the advanced midfield positions unless Vieira or ESR really take a leap this offseason.

Not a bad shout regarding Caicedo at RB.. could see him shutting down a lot of tricky wingers, mentioned it in a different thread that we should try find a midfielder that can be converted to a RB (and not the other way round) if we are to continue with this inverted style of play.. No idea if he would be willing to do that though.. seems bit unlikely seeing how sought after he is as a CM, you lose a bit of his aggressiveness in the middle too.. Having a quality inverted right back would also make it a lot more easier to play Tierney who is still has a lot to offer.

Doc I think you can sell him on it this season with the goal being that he will replace Partey long term and also deputize there throughout the season when Partey needs a rest or inevitably gets his 1 month hamstring injury.

I like his overall profile. Experienced yet the right age. Supremely skilled and from what I have seen very calm/controlled. Also a great tackler. Hope we are looking at him

The most obvious one. Alexander Isak. I would pay silly money for him. Tired of seeing these diminutive forwards at our club.

I'd love to see:

Forward Line: Marcus Thuram (since we are looking for a high quality rotation player and not a first choice here given the chemistry in our existing frontline, he can play both CF and RF at a good level)
MF: Caqueret / Rice / Merino (in that order) for #8, K. Thuram, Danilo (need both since Partey will have to be phased out quickly)
DF: Backups across the board (maybe except for Gabriel since Kiwior is supposed to be it)

Can get rid of Nketiah, Balogun, Holding, Tierney, Jorginho, Pepe, AMN. Vieira, ESR and Tomiyasu to have one more season to prove themselves (in terms of performance and / or fitness).

Meatwad I know its now exponentially difficult than before he went to NUFC and that is why I said i would it would need silly money. Hell it is a wish list afterall !

Are there any top left backs on the move in summer ... other than unattainables like Gwardiol.

I'd love it if we took a punt on a mobile, courageous and intelligent left back next window. Tierney has to go, and though Zinchenko fits the bill well as versatile squad depth, as soon as we upgrade Xhaka, Zinchenko's inverted full back role makes much less sense. He's defended poorly recently and looks like a player we can improve on.

Burnwinter Gvardiol has became predominantly a CB, but definitely Pep will play him at LB inverted crap.

I would love Theo here but he is very expensive. Hincapie will be a good option as he is also a CB and Arteta love that hybrid inverted thing instead of a proper LB.

Wish we got Estupinan few years ago though

I still don't understand why we don't try out Zinchenko in Xhaka's position where his link up play and passing ability can cause havoc and play Tierney at LB who can provide overlap support to Martinelli who often looks all alone.

Most baffling thing is having Tierney come on or start games and asking him to play like Zinchenko when he's a top overlapping LB.

If Bellingham is totally off the table now then something like:

Out: Smith-Rowe, Balogun, Tierney, Lokonga, Tavares, Holding, Trusty, Patino, Norton-Cuffy, Marquinhos

looks pretty nice and pretty do-able too.

I think the 'ins' look massively underwhelming, and struggle to see how they'll move the team on next year. I'm just seeing a list of largely potential that I can't imagine Arteta trusting when the going gets tough.

I can just about get behind the argument for selling Smith-Rowe, but if he's not being replaced by a star player then I don't see the point. I'd rather keep him around than have Mount or Olise.

We've looked pretty nice this year. We haven't looked like absolute killers hell bent on the title. We don't need more pretty nice.

Or Valverde? I'd like him over Mount for the Xhaka position but they're probably not going to move anyone this summer, you would think.

Valverde would be the absolute dream. Arteta would love to have his versatility in the team in my opinion but I am pretty sure that same versatility is going to make it easy for Madrid to keep him and Camavinga and fit them into the team. Him in the Xhaka role would be absolutely insane though. His movement, workrate and ballstriking would add so much to the team.
