That seems like a terrible move for him. He's going to be crying like Vitor Roque. You'd think after we took one of Real Madrid's people for SA scouting we'd get more of these kids.

Re: De Jong. Bartolmeu was giving out crazy deals before he was kicked out and FDJ was one of them (I mean they paid Messi 2.6m euros a week!). Given COVID, FDJ deferred his salary so now his wages are insane (base plus the deferred salary they have to pay him) at 720k euros a week. Laporta threatened to sue that his renewal wasn't legal but I guess that didn't materialize.

One of the issues about getting FDJ is that he wants his deferred money or the difference paid as a lump sum. Barca and Utd refused to do so 2 years ago. As Gurgen said, yeah, someone is going to have pay him that money to get him to leave. Should be less now given his contract ends in 2026.

I wonder how strongly he feels about that money now, like you say his contract is nearly up and he probably realised that it’s time to come off the gravy train now especially when you consider the fans can’t stand him and upper management all want him gone as well.

If we are in for him this is his chance for a big move to an exciting project and I think we’ll pay him a good wage. If money is the reason he turns us down then that is a massive red flag imo. Our project itself should sell itself these days, Frenkie mentioned once he saw his career as Ajax to Arsenal and then to Barca, so he defo has some positive feelings about the club.

Another thing is the player was offered this deal by Barca, he didn't hold a gun to their head and make them sign it. So for the new Barca board it is quite cheap for them to come in and try to smear him and force him leave using those kind of tactics. Resorting to those kind of tactics just about sums up Barca though. During the pandemic they mutually agreed to defer the wages so they should honour it.

I've seen a few reliable people talk about Havertz not being on that much. Supposedly around £250k and with all bonuses added on raises above £300k.

But your point is valid, Frenkie is a player who would command around £300k and we are in a position to offer him that. I remember a while ago though that a lot of our salaries are highly incentivised, so the base isn't super high but if they hit their targets they get paid a fair amount. That is defo the way to structure the contracts.

samthegooner the size of his pay cut is what matters here. None of our players currently break the PLs top 10 highest earners. United, City and Chelsea all pay more than we do. You've also got Bayern and PSG who'll pay way over what we will.

He'd probably come in with his agents asking for over £400k/w, and we might be able to talk him down to £300k/w à la Havertz. There can't be many clubs willing to pay more … that he'd actually go to, that is.

Can't see how that reputed lump sum to clear his contract is ever gonna work, though. This is why these guys shouldn't agree to stupid deals with clown clubs, the loss of career freedom doesn't do them huge favours.

Sure, it's just £30m. But it's a tricky negotiation due to these additional factors, adding on that it's the shysters at Barca handling the other side. Granted we've shown way, way more appetite for unlikely deals in the Edu era, but you get me.

TambourineMan his base pay is 400k euros per week. His deferred salary owed is about 310k until June 2026. So around 30m?

It's definitely complicated, and really comes down to how much Barca want to get rid.

But it's actually not that different to what happens to some of our relatively overpaid players. We pay them too much so have to sell them on the cheap to compensate. Those deals only happen when we let go of our pride and give in.

If it was as easy as people are making out United would have done it. They have more money than us and when they wanted him they were a CL team. And Barca were desperate to sell him at that point.

I don't think we can push these players beyond £300k now because if they win something they'll all want a reward raise too. We have to be ready for that. We're talking about how stupid Barca were but people want us to start playing the same silly games.

It's hard to imagine that we have some sort of salary policy where Havertz is the only one we're willing to break it for.

QuincyAbeyie Maybe we don't, but that makes it time to put an informal policy in place. It's great we were proactive on retaining key players well before Havertz signed. The incoming league spending cap system will help and hinder.

QuincyAbeyie Havertz was also the first star we had to fight for. So his elevated salary makes sense.
