Our system demands a lot from wingers: both creativity and end product, and pressing and work rate. If we had another Saka on the left wing, we'd be the best side in Europe. But it's hard to find someone who can tick all those boxes. At the same time, bringing in a sub-optimal option creates problems from a squad planning perspective, because a move for a LW makes either Martinelli or Trossard a lot less useful.
Similarly I'm not sure a big ticket CF like Isak is in the cards for us, because Havertz is too good a footballer to be on the bench. That's why we were after Sesko – different skillset with elite potential but not established enough to demand a starting role. But targeting a player with that profile is another difficult needle to thread.
All that said, it feels like we need an attacking player in January, since Sterling has not worked out and Jesus's confidence is shot.
