He's a top 5-10 striker at the moment for me, so I basically agree with you. However, he's so far below Mbappé and Haaland, or a prime Lewandowski and Benzema, not to mention the plethora of strikers from the past 10-15 years or so, that for me the term 'world class' becomes a little irrelevant.

As you say, it's a real shitty period in terms of top class strikers (and players in general, for that matter).

samthegooner you really should include Messi there as I think it was 10 years ago that he scored 90 goals in a calendar year playing as a (false) 9 😆

Anyway, for me the best striker of the past decade is Suarez, by a fair margin too.

Ricky1985 and that's around where flobaba and Wenger back then started parting ways. That 1 pound we added on. That's just not how a serious club operates. And we arguably lost a premier league or two directly as a result of our failure to close that deal.

Suarez was, for me, the perfect striker. Had everything other than searing pace in his locker. Benzema in recent seasons has come close but Suarez had more ability to singlehandedly alter games at his peak IMO. I agree on Messi as well- only omitted him since he's basically his own tier, both in terms of position and greatness.

Whilst I 100% agree we were not a serious club for far too many years, I'm not sure that's a fair assessment given that the Liverpool owner publicly stated that Suarez did infact had a release clause, which adding the extra pound to our bid activated, but they decided to ignore it and risk a court battle if it came to it.

Yeah we should have pushed the boat out there. Wenger was quite naive at times.

Qwiss how much of the Suarez fiasco was Wenger vs Dick Law (etc al)? I've assumed it's more the latter (potentially incorrectly).

Basically would recoup all their transfer fee on him if they sell. They'd be looking to make a big move for a player.

It seems to me that they keep losing proven quality and experience and replacing with kids. Their team seems like a mishmash of players in their peak/or over the hill and young players that either aren't quite good enough and/or are still too young.

I don't see good things happeneing for Klopp again there. I think he might not last the season. I can see him jumping before he's pushed halfway through if things don't go well.

JazzG these Saudi deals creating a whole new economic paradigm. 40m for a player like fabinho who is clearly on the way down is a dream for Liverpool, who have missed out on CL football

Wonder if thats the club or among the clubs that were interested in Partey? If so, that could have been us recouping full value.

Us and Liverpool re-shaping our midfields this season. Interesting to see who does a better job. Arguably though they do have greater room for improvement than us and their midfield did need a refresh. So perhaps not the fairest comparison.

Panda Essentially beating us at the moment to operation replace your number 6 depth with Lavia. I've been a lone voice in respecting Curtis Jones' game; he had an exceptional U21 World Cup by all accounts. Him and the others together start to form a good midfield and calls of Liverpool demise back around Nov-Feb were premature I think. They will have essentially recycled their front line and midfield between the last window and the end of this one.

Panda That has always been the going rate for Saudi league as you seen from all other deals. Not sure why people here actually thought we would be lucky to get 20m for Partey from Saudi etc.

Ricky1985 they seem to be going back to square one with a new squad. A bit similar to ourselves over the last few years. I think its really the only way to compete with the oil clubs. Otherwise you end up like United in recent years, constantly trying to patch the squad with half measures. Have to agree about Klopp though, I don't see him going through a rebuild. Hopefully they don't find another Klopp for their new era.

I do agree they need someone experienced or top drawer there if they are selling Henderson & Fabinho.

They are, but not very long ago they were being talked about as potential suitors for Bellingham and Mbappé, the players they're signing or being linked to now are a million miles away from that.

They should have been all over Rice, Havertz, and Timber, just as an example. These guys have tons of experience at the very highest levels, they're the right age, and are ready to go and to win.

Instead they're wasting the twilight years of top class players in Alisson, van Dijk, Robertson, and Salah next to kids, and paying them in-line with the very best players in the world to boot. It seems really poor from a strategic standpoint to me. All a bit Arsenal 2008-2020 - mishmash and lacking in a coherent vision.

Ricky1985 think dropping out of the CL cost them any chance at Bellingham. Mbappe was never serious for them.
