@Qwiss @Clrnc I didn't say there would be consequences for Chelsea as a result of their spending. Nor did I say the market was unsustainable. Chelsea's spending is unsustainable. Do you really think they can continue to spend like they have window after window?
They're clearly on a crazy buying spree to try and massively alter course. I doubt they'd have either the will or means to continue in that manner. But my point is, that behaviour is largely an outlier, even in mad football transfer market. If we play along we normalise that behaviour and it feeds into a sharper quickening of a general market increase.
My preference would be to walk away from deals with clubs pointing to the likes of Chelsea's fees as a marker when pricing their players, and I'd hope other clubs would too. A few instances of that and prices for the top end should correct themselves. But as Clrnc pointed out above, there's a fear that if you don't buy in you miss out. I can't help feel there are far more options out there should you walk away from a deal, and struggle to see why a player who has had half a season in Europe is now worth over £100m, or why Chelsea bending over and being lubed up for him should mean the market pays more in general.
It'll be interesting to see how much interest there is for Caicedo in summer and what his eventual fee is.
