Going by your reasoning, maybe second is the peak of what we can achieve? We haven't spent all that more than our rivals. Over the short term, both Chelsea and United have out spent us. So we aren't spending like a club looking to pull ahead, we are spending just to keep up.
Again, it depends on where you want to judge from. We are trending upwards from the point Arteta took over. We are trending downwards from last season, or hell since Christmas.
You're right, fans generally judge season by season, and in some cases so do clubs. I'm more interested in 3-5 year trajectories because it's long term plan execution that delivers transformation, not seasonal performance or bi-annual transfer windows.
We are in year 5 (?), so we absolutely need to be up there in terms of competing for trophies. I expect a good end to both the PL and CL campaigns, though not necessarily winning it. If we're out of contention long before the end, that would start to raise some questions.
