They've no other striker now because Wilson is gone. Could easily see them having Jackson and Isak for the season. They wanted Ekitike before the Isak situation blew up.

This might be true but this woman is also very close to Liverpool so is probably doing some PR work on their behalf.

I have no doubt that we would have been there if he was available this summer, clearly we’ve been told this was not the case which is why we pursued other options. Even though it would’ve been a very expensive deal, I still think we would’ve at least tried. Clnc also mention this and said we held back on the Gykoeres deal to see if we wanted to try with Isak, there was probably no indication from Newcastle they would charge their stance and the last thing we want is to be spend the whole summer chasing after him and to lose out in the end and not sign any striker.

Our pursuit of him is all proving to be complete bollocks - we were fed all this nonsense about Newcastle securing CL football determining whether he would leave or not. When it was obviously all contingent on Isak. Did we even try to sign him? Between Watkins in January and this, I've lost all faith in this club wanting to be the best. Only Gyokeres can wash this pain away.

daredevil tbf Liveprool had also moved onto Ekitike until Isaks agent started pushing him again. It certainly seems like most clubs were under the impression a deal wasn't happening and then Isaks camp changed tack. This stuff now looks like damage control from Isak TBH.

Qwiss Yeah exactly, noway he has told the club he wants out and Arsenal/Liverpool have not shown any interest, when both clubs had nearly secured strikers it was clear his team panicked and kicked off about things.

Liverpool have shifted a lot of players so makes it easier for them to be in the Isak race but clear they are sitting back and letting him kick off to force the issue.

FEBravo Thing is all good Isak wanting to leave but Newcastle up to that point had shown no interest in selling him. If Newcastle were interesting in selling them surely they would have made moves for a striker early in the window to secure his replacement and then let clubs fight it out for Isak.

Best guess at the timeline:

Isak confirmed to Newcastle he wanted to leave following several summers of enquiries rebuffed from suitors. Newcastle pointed to the two years left on his contract and said he could leave for £150m.

Isak's team thought he'd have top clubs interested at £150m, but not one club has been red-hot keen at that price.

Then Liverpool gazumped Newcastle for Isak's planned replacement Ekitike, and Isak and his team got spooked.

Then Arsenal opted for Gyökeres, even though Isak's team started shaking his booty at us with the pen raised.

Now Liverpool has answered Isak's cry for help but told him to drive the price down, so he's left all his eggs in one basket but is also stuck waiting round on strike and in limbo looking like a turkey.

I think what Clarence was reporting makes sense. If we had tried to go for him now, we'd end up starting the season without a striker, without any guarantee that it would go through, and that's without even factoring the huge risk in terms of the fee and his fitness, which is still my main concern with him. So I can see why we decided to push through the Gyokeres deal, which was pretty much done by that point.

It's one of those where you just have to make that call with incomplete information and hope it works out. Future will tell us if it was wise or not, but I find it hard to blame the club on this one (as opposed to others where I have no such qualms!).

JazzG Indeed. Could have been his agent who contacted Liverpool/Arsenal to try to get things going. Makes no sense otherwise.

Why is it only Arsenal that is unable to make a proposal for a player unless the selling club has admitted a willingness to sell?

Burnwinter I think there's an even simpler explanation: his agents are looking at all these other strikers moving around Europe while Isak is stuck at Newcastle. Maybe they thought there'd be less movement in the market: they miscalculated badly if so, and now they're in panic mode because all the top clubs might be set up top for years except for maybe Barca, who in return don't have any money.

Way I see it Isak's agents saw we were finalizing Gyökeres and made a come-and-get-me-call. When we wouldn't alter our plans the next call went to Liverpool, who had just started getting serious with Ekitike. Which makes sense; I mean where is he gonna go if Arsenal and Liverpool are off the market? PSG, Manchester City and Real Madrid already have much better strikers. Bayern don't need him. Chelsea and Man United aren't good enough. There are only so many clubs left. Atletico isn't really the level you make your big move to (and I'm not sure he's better than Julian Alvarez anyway). Italian clubs don't have the kind of cash to buy him.

At any rate I don't believe for a second that he told them ages ago he was gonna leave this summer. After the cup final the Newcastle owners stated outright that Isak was not for sale no matter what. No one from his camp made any noise when those stories broke. Top transfers are months or years in the making. If his intention was to leave his agent would have told every single interested club repeatedly over the past 6-12 months and drawn up plans for how to launch a bid. We would have gotten leaks, stories and counter-narratives fed to media along the way.
