Claudius I am disappointed in this season’s overall outcome, but to just lump everything into a big bucket of abhorrent failure feels either lacking in nuance or disingenuous
We made progress in Europe both in results and performances, but the margins are fine. That's all fair enough. It's a knockout competition and PSG outfoxed us.
League performances this past season have had declining relevance. We've been out of the league since round Christmas. We never got back into it. Refereeing decisions and injuries played a role in dropping out, but so did a lack of elite forwards and the shadow cast by last season's near miss.
The real nuance needed isn't a narrative of incremental progress: this is a football club not compound interest.
To me, we're an uncertain proposition going into next season. Yes, there will be lots of reasons to be optimistic if and when we've got Zubimendi and a striker signed. We're in a very good position with the average age, experience and quality of our squad, the players are locked in with each other, I think we've got a very fine manager in Arteta despite certain weaknesses.
But there's no corpus of numbers that can tell us what kind of Arsenal shows up in the league. We haven't played a league match in properly competitive conditions in months. It seems to me there's less spark and less unity now as well.
