No question an extension would be a good move from a sporting perspective. We do not want Zubimendi, a transfer who will need time to adapt to the PL and our style of play, to be the only 6 on the roster next season. I don't buy MLS as a 6, and Rice is being moved to an 8.

The guy is playing for a new contract, I'm 99% sure of this. I don't even think for Sporting reasons we should be keeping him. He's unreliable with his injuries, you can see he is getting slower on the pitch and that leaves us exposed. In the CL this isn't as exposed but in the PL it is clear to see.

We should be signing Zubimendi + a young prospect. I do get the views that if Zubimendi doesn't settle right away it could cause issues, hopefully Rice + Merino can cover that though.

Look I already described, at length adequate to provoke a chorus of whining, how football washes reputations. But this is tantamount to saying "Alisher Usmanov invested in Everton so he must be a cleanskin".

Would be disappointed if we renewed him. I guess I see the logic, but once Zubimendi or another new signing is here, Partey either doesn't start or "kills" the prospect he intermittently starts ahead of.

With respect to our midfield ranks we are currently waiting on Havertz and Merino to return while plotting the signing of a starter in Partey's position. One of Havertz or Merino is counted as a 9, but if we're counting both, the summer's already lost.

As for the flexibility available, demanding we retain Partey is a matter of asserting Rice definitely can't play 6. It's a stretch.

Watching Partey mostly ride the pine for 1–2 years would be much like watching Sterling occasionally run out in front of a youth star. The mitigation when seeing the old man warm up is that at least it only happens in irrelevant matches.

We operate on a policy of two players per position, and I think it's the minimum a club chasing multiple honours needs to adhere to. Even with this level of depth, injuries battered us this season. There's nothing wrong with having players who can cover multiple positions, but it's not an excuse to reduce the numbers.

For the 3 CM spots we have: 6) Partey/Jorginho, 8) Rice/Merino, 10) Odegaard/Nwaneri (but in practice as Sterling has been so bad, Nwaneri has been Saka's cover and we have no alternate to Odegaard).

Havertz is one of the 9s and the other 9 (Jesus) is basically a write off, so he doesn't factor into the discussion. We're not signing two 9s this summer.

Dowman I think is unlikely to form part of the 22 next season.

Assuming we sign a proper winger, then we can say Nwaneri is part of the midfield trio and so 10 is covered. 8 is fine too. But if we let both our 6s go, we need to get 2. Zubi is one. If you think MLS is the other OK, I don't think so, but if he is, then we either need to sign another LB or keep Zinchenko. Otherwise we're robbing Peter to pay Paul.

This would be a really awful decision by the club but I guess you can't expect much from them they don't really consider doing the right thing morally as something that is part of the clubs identity anymore. I don't even think the football reasons are that strong because he's always been a massive injury liability and I don't think that's going away.

Claudius Wouldn't be the first player to play out of skin and then fall off after signing a new contract. Sometimes it down to motivation, once they secure that contract the motivation levels drop.

Sicario2 How much money would he want though? We've seen Salah/VVD bend Liverpool over, they can probably command that money elsewhere. We are already paying Partey £200k a week. If he ends up on the bench should we be giving those kind of contracts out?

I'm a big fan of him as a player but as a club we need to move on, I do accept the point about us losing Partey + Jorginho in one summer is something we need to consider. I do think having Rice + Merino should be able to manage if a new player needs time to bed in. I don't think Zubimendi will take too long to settle in, important we get him early and has a proper preseason with us and I think he'll slot right in.

I do think we need two players, one in Zubimendi and a younger player. Someone like Nypan would have been ideal but sounds like he is going to Villa. The CM has been a mess for too long, need to sort it properly this window.

Can't help but feel Berta is the core reason behind Party's renewal. Seems a pragmatic take but not one I'm convinced Arteta is fully on board with given his previous comments about the situation.

I know I am going to regret wading again into this cesspool of a thread but some of you really need to educate yourselves on Sexual Assault and why criminal convictions are so rare compared to the number of attacks. And while false accusations certainly do occur, the prevalence of them is vastly overreported. This study (https://www.rapecrisisscotland.org.uk/resources/False-allegations-briefing-2021.pdf) reports that false accusations made up just 3% of total accusations. I am not discounting that folks here may know people who have been falsely accused and definitely empathize with the damage that such accusations would cause. But the reality is that most claims are true and it's just extremely hard for SA victims to find justice currently. I have a really hard time believing that the club has concrete proof that Partey is innocent and instead is just making decisions based on the legal system and avoiding lawsuits from Partey and his legal team. While I'd prefer them to take a harder line stance, it's at least understandable to avoid litigation. However, extending their relationship with the player with all of the accusations (and it's not just one woman) is beyond tone deaf. I hope they listen to the backlash against the report yesterday and make the prudent decision this summer in severing our ties with the player, regardless of his performance on the pitch.

Not only are false accusations over-reported, they make up just 3% of accusations which are reported. Various studies of the underreporting of sexual offences estimate only between 15-25% of sexual crimes are reported by the victims (https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2024-03/LVC%20Rape%20Policy%20Paper%202024.pdf) so the 3% is a small percentage of a small percentage.

Look closer at the link above and you’ll see the numbers of charges arising from criminal investigations is very small, and the number of charges made in the same period as the offence occurred is even smaller again. So what we’re seeing with Partey is not an exception, it is absolutely the norm in a society in which victims of sexual violence do not come forward because the justice systems is not able to fully support them and convict their attackers.

The facts are out there for those who wish to understand them.
