Reading that article, it actually looks like they're putting 2+2 together to make 5. The fact we've agreed a fee + the fact that he's been left out of the squad, doesn't mean we're signing him.

Nuance, Quincy. It’s not about whether he’s shit, it’s about whether he’s a great fit for the type of football Arteta would want a fullback to play. Easy to press, no left foot, predictable use of right foot, etc. Very few of the players I’ve been saying we need to dump for the last two years are actually shit - they’re just bad for Arteta ball. You and I have had this argument about so many of the players who eventually left, eg Pepe.

It also goes back to the old argument that Klaus used to have that Arteta needs to play good football with what he had, which never made sense to me.

zubimendi looks OK but tbh patino looks in a similar mould and is developing pretty well

I think Caicedo is the right play. Zubimendi is also great, but he doesn't have that balls-to-the-wall intensity of the Ecuadorian.

Coombs He has a footballing brain and great passing ability which is much more important.

I don’t know what you’re saying now. Let me reiterate. The most important thing is fit. What is the manager’s style?. What is the squad plan? Based on that, select and buy players. Aim to make squad where every role is clear and the plates fit spec. Don’t mix together a bunch of leftovers just cos you have them

I agree, my comment was a roundabout way of saying that - where possible - let's add qualities that are missing from the squad and from the youth pipeline. caicedo fits that profile a bit better

wonder what we do if caicedo is indeed a dead end. don't particularly want a mid-range-but-still-pricey option like onana. we've shown we do have a budgetary threshold and these january prices are pushing it to the limit. might need to look at a value loan option.

I hate the last couple of days of the window. It's 4pm Monday here and the window closes 10am Wednesday for us in Sydney. That's far too long to be worrying about some Ecuadorian I've only recently heard about.

It's been a disappointing couple of weeks missing out on key targets. Ordinarily I'd be a lot less bothered with starlets in the shop window for £70m plus.

Someone like Caicedo may be good but we have a team of guys we got for less who are probably better or not far off.

My main concern though is that we don't somehow Arsenal our way out of what has, against expectations—and I really doubt you if you think you saw this charge coming—turned into one of our best league challenges in ages, and one we may not better any time soon,

I’m not annoyed at the club. It would certainly be nice to get a midfielder in.
But I appreciate that this Caicedo situation is much, much harder tha Mudryk one, which itself was tough. Basically, we didn’t need a Mudryk profile. We just needed any hood forward. Here, we need a Caicedo age player given how old Xhaka/Partey are. But good enough to contribute. And hope that teams will trade that person in January.

midfield equivalent of trossard is needed - maybe revisit Douglas Luiz or tielemans? a quick squiz at some liecester forums would suggest hes one of very few still playing well for them, but he needs a move to rediscover his top form. we could throw out 15-20m to test Leicesters resolve, then we can go for rice, caicedo or bellingham in the summer.

Would rather a loan deal than be encumbered with someone we don't really want.

Luiz extended contract in the fall. I doubt try club is as keen on Tielemans as Tielemans is on the club.
