not sure about onana. 2 years ago I would've probably said yes, but looking at how we play now, we need quality passing across the midfield 3. onana adds power, tackling and drive, but imo is well behind xhaka and partey in terms of passing and build up play. a rice and onana pairing has an endless amount of graft but is too lacking in craft. maybe the club see something more in his game to be unlocked

Hopefully this is enough to push Zubi over the edge and he sees reason to come early. There are 22-30 games left. Lots of games for everyone.

Claudius I feel like it's going to be near impossible to convince Zubi to come early given his attachment to Real Sociedad and the fact they are very much in the hunt in La Liga. If our big targets for the summer are going to be him and/or Rice, I'd be a big fan of just finding some cover that can do the job that Elneny does on a short term loan for numbers. Then we can focus on our long term plan in the summer while keeping powder dry and avoiding an overcrowded midfield to make room for elite reinforcements a la Rice/Zubi/SMS/Camavinga.

Everything you want in a CM, can dribble, great close control and power, superb tackler and good range of passing.

goon -- high energy, forward looking CM...he plays alongside McAllister in a two man midfield, though McAllister is normally freed up to be further forward.

Slightly more defensive than Rice, and more aggressive/forward than Partey. I think he could slot in for Partey if he was asked to temper some of his eagerness as his defensive game is solid and his passing is quite good.

But he's certainly not an one to one replacement for Partey in regards to positioning/role.

Thanks guys. He sounds good. Worth remembering Partey didn't join us as a 6 so any player can be trained for the position as long as they have good press-resistance and passing.

Not expecting this one to pan out for us if Brighton really want that
much. Fair play to Arsenal if this is meant to be a decoy ( to drum up his price and get a little payback too) while we pursue someone within budget.

Using a big dream signing like Caicedo as a decoy while we go for a budget option sounds like a terrible move for fan hype regarding said signing.

Is there a world where we would potentially go big for Caicedo in January AND go for Rice in the summer? I do think Rice could play the 8/false 10 role that Xhaka has made his own this year but it would be a big outlay for two players that seemingly have a decent amount of overlap in positions. I don't think we would do it but just spitballing until we get any actual news.

Chelsea are briefing the press they're "in" for every player on the market. Supposedly they're vying with Liverpool for Matheus Nunes as well now.

Chelsea won't have Champions League next season, but I think it'd be a brave soul to predict with any certainty they'll have it the season after either. All of the current top four will be strengthening and maintaining continuity—albeit Arsenal and NUFC will have the challenge of that extra competition—but right now it looks a lot like Potter won't last the distance to me.
