Sicario2 - Tier 1

With Timber out for the rest of the season, Tierney sent on loan to La Liga, Holding/Cedric most likely to leave, Zinny and Tomi being injury prone, anyone concerned about the depth of our back line?

Let’s say Holding/Cedric do go we only have the following:

Zinny
Tomi
(Kiwor can play here)

CB:
Gabiel
Saliba
Kiwor
(White can play here)

RB:
White
(Tomi can play here)

But essentially we got 6 defenders that can play across 4 positions which i don’t think is enough. We need at least 8.

I’m not considering Partey as an option btw.

If Zinny and Tomi get injured at the same time we will be fucked for depth

I think we’ll bring in another defensive player. Schuurs, Garcia or Tapsoba. If Gabriel goes then we’ll move for Guehi.

Don’t forget Reuell Walters.

None of the major ITK’s have even mentioned any of these players mate. I really doubt we will bring someone in.

Walters is good for the league cup, that’s it.

Are you basing that assessment of Walters on seeing a lot of him, or are you just making a general statement because he's a kid?

You think he’s ready to play for the men’s team this season?

Going from kids football to the men’s team is a big leap. Maybe a loan first would be more useful unless this is a huge talent that I’ve missed?
I mean if he was so good surely he would have played mins in friendlies like Emirates Cup?

Arteta is not a fan of promoting youth to the first team either. Has rarely done it.

I'm not saying he is ready or will ever be, no - I wanted to know if you were just generalising.

I'm not an expert on him, but he does profile very well in relation to Timber. And Arteta has had him around the first team in training for the past year or so now, including in matchday squads. So, I would guess he must be a confident kid who handles the level of intensity and physicality in training.

I still think we'll go into the market for someone to fill the Timber-shaped hole.

Interesting analysis of how we have tweaked our tactics a bit this season. Think it partially explain why we haven't looked that fluid this season yet. Hopefully Rice can add more to his locker as the season progresses to improve his pivot game but also Zinchenko will be massive in providing that progression through the middle of the pitch.

I saw that earlier, it seemed like grasping to me. He compared a stroll in the park at Craven Cottage to a dogfight at Selhurst Park to try to prove his theory. I bet if he compared it to the game at Selhurst Park last season, which was also a dogfight, the point he was making wouldn't stand up to scrutiny at all.

Think it's more around build up from the wings vs centrally regardless of how tough the game was.. Still early days but we have definitely focused more through the channels so far, which is not necessarily a bad thing but enabling the team to be able to switch between both when needed will be a massive plus. Zinchenko can really help with that.

Our defence this season should have been:

Zinchenko-Gabriel-Saliba-White
Tierney-Kiwior-Tomiyasu-Timber

With Timber ruled out and Tierney loaned out and Arteta moving Partey to inverted RB. I now have no idea what the defence is. I guess it should be something like this:

Zinchenko-Gabriel-Saliba-White
Tomiyasu-Kiwior-(Holding?)-Partey

But it currently looks like:

Tomiyasu-Saliba-White-Partey
Zinchenko-Gabriel-Kiwior-(Cedric?)

Can anyone make sense of this? If Zinchenko is fit enough to start surely we will go with our solid back 4 that have played together the longest against Man U.

And if he bloody wants Partey in midfield with Rice then just play him in the midfield!

Just realised both Afcon/Asian are in january. So that means we miss Tomiyasu and Partey in that period.

We should really be signing a full back/defender between now and Friday. We got 6 defenders for 4 positions, 2 of them are injury prone (and we could lose one for a prolonged period in Jan as you said) and 1 could be on his way out.

We started the summer window brilliantly but typically it’s ended quite poorly.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 didn’t we sign a highly coveted defender earlier this summer? Obviously that requires lots of scouting and prep. He is back in a season, so whatever contingency we put in place has to take that into account. With Timber on the team, Tuerney fell to 4th in his favoured position. The work was done. We just need to adapt to an unfortunate injury

Yeah I've been worried about this a bit.

Saliba, White, Gabriel, Timber, Kiwior, Cedric, Holding, Tomiyasu, Tavares, Tierney, Zinchenko.

Take out the ones who are either gone on loan or to be sold or injured or badly unwanted, and you've got …

Saliba, White, Gabriel, Kiwior, Tomiyasu, Zinchenko.

Across left, central, right defence we've got something like:

LB  Zinchenko / Kiwior / Tomiyasu
LCB Saliba / Gabriel / Kiwior / Tomiyasu
RCB Saliba / White / Tomiyasu
RB  White / Tomiyasu / Partey

That's a motley crew. Take out Tomiyasu as per last season and you're reliant on Kiwior rotating due to Zinchenko's brittleness, and you're also running a high risk of Saliba or White getting injured or jaded as per last season.

Timber was a very astute signing and would be a convincing fix to this situation if he were available. If Tomiyasu stays fit we're certainly no worse though.

Tomiyasu will be broken down injured long before then anyway so would never have been available that deep into the season.

Assuming every player can only cover for one position at a time (because that's what happens in an injury crisis), this is our squad depth.

I think that's probably how it featured on Edu's board to be justified to let those defenders go. Still have 2 players per position but defence wise with so many out now is really looking very weak.

Shouldn't even put Timber, Elneny on that list. Also, Tomiyasu and Zinchenko will both probably miss 50% of the games. Jesus being fit is also a lottery.

I wonder if Walters is being considered part of the group, albeit very peripherally, in numbers terms. Given Timber is out for the season, for us to have 2 players per position (which is what I think Arteta demands), we need to include either him or Cedric.

Pepe LeFrits How many academy players have played under Arteta, other then the ones that were already in the squad? Almost none. He played the first team squad in the EL even when the group was won. He played the first team against that horrible league 2 team. Same when we went out in the FA Cup vs lower league team. Walters will play 20 minutes max, at the end of a League Cup game.
