RvP was good then, but he really reached his peak in 2011 or thereabouts. His last two seasons with us and 2 more with the Mancs, I think. Can't be arsed to check the exact seasons, trying my best to forget.

Of course he was a crock but it's a hypothetical about each player at their best. RVP peaked in 2011 but he was still really good in 08, also this current team has played nine games comparisons aren't really on either way.

Was never going to happen given the history but still think if we'd re-signed Anelka that January, we'd have probably gone on to win it in 08.

Rate Jesus highly but no way he's at the level of Adebayor 08 or RVP.

I'm talking about with our current formation and style of play which I personally thought is a more interesting exercise.

If you're trying to play out the back you're not going to get far with Clichy and Sagna... it was a big gripe of mine with both of them in the seasons that followed. Having them tuck in would also take away from what made them brilliant that season.

Has nothing to do with being knee jerk or recency bias, it makes sense that a set of players bought to play in a system will dominate selection for that system. If you flip it around to who from the current team would get into that side then my answers would be different.

Yep. There were two or three seasons during the "stadium era" where canny investment would've put us in sight of a title, 2017 being the last. That was the main reason I started to want Wenger gone.

Our current style of play is also a consequence of the much more intent pressing teams do nowadays. We would've been set up differently in the Wenger era if gegenpressing had been so ubiquitous.

Peak Koscielny plus Saliba would be a pretty mouth-watering defensive combination. Pace, agility, courage, domination.

Teams in the relegation zone press you these days, unthinkable in the Wenger era. Being able to pass out the back is essential if you want to play any sort of football. Remember debating the merits of having ball playing defenders and keepers when Pep first came in and ditched Joe Hart for a hapless Bravo. We're heading in a direction where keepers need to be among the best passers of the ball.

It really is. He's our most important player, not necessarily because he's the best but because nobody else can do his job. We have the same situation with Saka and Martinelli but that's because ESR is injured.

Eddie, Sambi and Vieria have really stunk the place out in the EL.

Show a lack of intensity and ‘wanting it badly enough’.

Need a proper re-look of our squad options next season if we get CL.

Two additions in January would really help. Even just a wide forward would go a long way.
I’m struggling to figure out to what extent those players are disappointing versus too much is expected of them.

With Mo back, and hopefully ESR back after the WC, i'd be surprised if we signed a midfielder. I think we have enough options at 8 (Odegaard, Xhaka, Vieira, Smith Rowe, Sambi) and probably the same story at 6 (Partey, El Neny, Sambi and Zinchenko). Unless we have a crisis i think we'll manage.

I do think we'll push for another winger, though. Whether or not we get one is another story.

Probably see a few links to midfielders but i'd be surprised if we really went for one. Think that'll be a job for the summer.

Hopefully i'm off the mark with that one. One of each would put us in great shape for the run in, especially considering the drop in quality from Partey down to the next three. But that says as much about how good Partey is as it does about how underwhelming the other options are. Not many attainable midfielders who could come in and do the job Partey does. Would love them to prove me wrong, though.

I think a winger makes sense, but I wouldn’t mind either:

a pure goal scorer (Vardy, if he was to refund form) to jump ahead of Nketiah
Or
a CF who can also play wide (Ollie Watkins)

Those are budget additions, not Willy sharing Woshkist material mind you

Saw a comment recently that rated LeSulk as being the biggest talent we've had at CF, but Titi and RVP rate higher becasue of their better mental application.

Thank fuck Southgate has tried every defender in the land in his 721 formations. At least he still has guys like White, Trent and Shaw to call upon
