Pedro Neto
Full respect for Pepe. He just wants to play.
Plus he was probably earning way too much anyway vs his impact
hopefully ornstein is in the dark on our dealings, like with partey
Disappointing if we miss out but if wolves asking for silly money then you have to walk away.

Arteta has said some pretty bullish things to the media. My guess would be we've got at least one big option that hasn't surfaced in the press yet.

Missing out on him is fine but if we miss out on a winger entirely then it's not
][Fabrizio Romano] Expect late movement from Arsenal. Edu and Mikel Arteta will be busy in the next hours and days to find the right opportunity. There’s no movement for Pino as of now and Villarreal hope to keep him. For Neto, it’s up to Arsenal but it’s not easy because Wolves want over £50m[/quote]If the number starts with a 4 we have done good business for him. Reliant on the player pushing for it and Mendes being able to facilitate a deal.

Has to be the right guy rather than making a signing for the sake of it.

I want us to sign a midfielder that can be groomed as Partey's successor and be better than Elneny in the role from the moment he walks in the door, and a wide man to push Saka and Martinelli, someone with speed, intensity and goal threat.
I'm not so worried about the 8 position because I think we have internal options, though I wouldn't pass up a bonus Tielemans, he doesn't top my list for my picks in the 6 or 8 positions, but if he's really cheap then he's good enough to be very useful.
In the other two positions I really hope we only sign players if there exactly what we're looking for and are top players now or can be developed into top players. Keep the squad quality over quantity.

In that case we should've kept Pepe as backup. Can't first get rid of the depth and then go "the right player wasn't available".
winger fomo is kicking in now that we've let pepe go. hope we get a deal done for this guy
The standards are too high now and the demands of the system too great to add for the sake of adding. Pépé is better off elsewhere, and I think it's better for Arsenal as well to have him in France building value than unhappy here because he's not a good fit/not good enough.
We can't add another Pépé just to make up the numbers, we have some options on the right wing in the squad already, only spend money and commit a squad place to someone if they can take the squad up another level. Neto is that, I can't see many others available that are.

I agree but it doesn't always work out that simple, if Pepe is pushing hard and the other club is pushing to sign him before a certain date then you need to make a decision. We'll have to judge them at the ned of the window.

If Arteta got rid of Auba in Jan with no replacement coming in he will do the same with Pepe going out and no one coming in either.
We may have to look at internal solutions. Nelson? Marquinhos? Vieria? 3 of them all unproven at this level so it a massive risk if don’t get anyone, even someone on loan.
Apart from an international break we play 2 games per week until WC. It’s imperative we have a proper squad.
@Jazz Definitely not judging the window yet, but people said before Pepe left that we were short out wide so if we from that point get rid of him and then don't get anyone it's a giant fuck-up. They had to make a decision, okay sure - if we don't get anyone they made the wrong one. If they've been working on Neto "for months" then days before the window is closed you should have an idea of how realistic it is.
I don't want to speak for others, but the view that we were short out wide was predicated on the idea that Pépé was a very poor option given his previous contribution, especially his most recent season.
Whatever someone might think of his talent, how much have Arsenal really lost by not having him in the squad for this season?

The preservation of Saka
I think Pepe definitely could still have an impact for us but it was clear he doesn't want to be here nor does Arteta trust him.
Problem for Pepe is he is up against Saka and Saka is the better player.

They might feel confident Marquinhos can be backup worst case? It is a very risky strategy and could backfire if it doesn't work.

The preservation of Saka
If it's just about preserving Saka then I'm not sure Vieira could offer much less than what Pépé has been offering, and there's the option of switching Martinelli to the right side - which he's played a number of times and done well - and playing Smith Rowe or Nketiah wide left. Maybe Marquinhos too but he is a near total unknwown at this pooint, at least to us.
If it's about getting another top quality option in, someone similar in style and potential to Saka and Martinelli, taking the squad up a notch in the process, then sign that player. If not, don't.
That's my view anyway.

pepe isn't a very poor option when you have European games. he's a goal threat in those games and takes the pressure off our young players. our young wingers are showing they can be inconsistent and that its still too early to throw everything on their shoulders. esr is also suspect with injuries, so we do need more bodies out there as well. vieira doesn't fit the profile of a winger for us at all, no way he's as good an option as pepe
we're short out wide now, it's clear. arteta said it himself. I agree whoever we bring in needs to be first 11 quality, but it's a bit irresponsible if we don't have a plan in place after letting pepe go
