Hadn't thought about that. I guess my critique would be that it doesn't feel the best way to maximise Saka's ability...maybe we'll mix it up over the course of the season.

His game is a bit simpler / prescribed now. If you're double teamed, commit the second defender, and once he's drawn in lay off the ball. If they let you go one v one then take the defender on and try to create a chance from there. He needs be the aggressor in his encounters. Force the reaction by being quicker to attack his defender so the double team isn't as readily set up and he can take better advantage of his one v one scenarios.

That Nigerian kid that plays for Villarreal would be a great option to have in the squad to perform a similar role at a similar level

Not worried about Saka. Seems like every match we are so good people need to nitpick at other stuffs which is a good sign. First Odegaard, now Saka haha.

White and Xhaka are the only places for obvious upgrading.

Not used to games being this comfortable away from home. Really good all around.

Only complaint would be that we were a little slow and disjointed coming out for the second half. We really should have been on it to grab the third goal. Also need to make the more of those counter attacking situations as games develop to really kills teams off.

Didn't get to watch the game unfortunately, but watched the extended 18 minutes highlights. There was barely a Bournemouth attack in the entire video, were we extremely comfortable in defense?

Yup. I don't think they touched the ball in our area in the first half and the only save I think Ramsdale made was a 2nd half header that was going wide

We were. They had way more of the ball than they should have in the second half (we've got to stop doing that), but the only way they got near our goal really was a few long throws.

I am okay with them getting more of the ball, we obviously took our foot off the gas and was coasting and yet they were never in any danger of troubling us.

That is the idea. Taken straight out of the Pep (and Cruyff) textbook. Wingers play all the way out wide to force full backs to make difficult decisions - stay close to the cb or be isolated out wide against the winger.

Fully expect Saka's role to become more important against stronger opposition, in part because he's also been an important outlet and release valve against teams that press more effectively and prevent us from playing smoothly forward in the past.

Not really worried about either of them, mind. Especially Saka. I know what the kid has in his locker when on form. But he’s playing at a level slightly below right now. I expect his form to improve as the season progresses, and he understands the new dynamic of the forward line which now includes a rampant, free roaming Jesus and a more confident Martinelli.

Odegaard scored a couple yesterday you would expect him to score, but that’s not the criticism I have of him. It’s his aggressiveness, and ability to help us keep the ball when we are not as dominant that’s a bit of a let down. It becomes more evident in games against better quality opposition.

Saka needs more variety in his movement too. He is very predictable off the ball.

I think that's a bit simplistic. If you take a system's-led approach to the way our team operate, one player (Xhaka for example) changing position/role is going to impact the position/role of another player (Odegaard for example).

Xhaka and Odegaard have been playing level, and in comparable roles (albeit with different strengths. Look at any of the heat maps and you'll see Xhaka in the left channel as an 8 and Odegaard in the right. The only major change is the quality and efficiency of our right flank, which was an issue last year, and the drop in our left flank as the primary attacking flank.

Also, we're not playing a back 3 as the team is set up in game as a 2-3-5. Both White and Zinchenko are pulling in tight to Partey and slightly ahead of our CBs, not level (as a back 3).

We're usually been playing as a 2-3-5 in possession but yesterday was more often 3-2-5. I haven't seen a heat map, but I did see this:

I do agree that the formation in game can be seen as either 2-3-5 or 3-2-5 with not much different between the two when White is at that RCB/RB hybrid position.
