Due to age, durability, size and athleticism, Havertz shades Jesus as the "utility" or "shuttle" defensive forward (uh, false 9, but you get me—it's a hard graft role) in our squad, which is why the latter has often been benched this season.

When Jesus plays you remember his good and bad points: quick feet and mind and he's a pain in the ass for as long as he can run, but he's only got an hour of running in him and he very rarely hits the net.

People might call me a prick for this, but Jesus has gotta be on the "maybe sell" pile in summer, along with a few more very good players we've been lucky to enjoy.

Building on what you’re saying, I like to ask three questions about players as we think about competing for big trophies
1) is he a top 5 per center in his position
2) is he generally fit and available
3) does he fit the philosophy

Applying that lens, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Rice, Odegaard, Saka pass my personal test. I am happy for the club to keep pushing the other guys further down the rotation or out the club.

What kind of sucks is that I thought we could buy a super striker and also solve the winger competition problem since Jesus could also play there. However he's seemed painfully slow after his latest injury, so I'm not sure if he can do that anymore.

awooga83 The challenge is that Arteta's philosophy has been very defence focused and people doing everything in our own area of the pitch to the detriment of that side of the game and in the slim margins at the top that it's proving a problem.

Agree with your post except this bit. I think it's less about being defensively minded and more about being system-oriented. Those 'difference-makers' you refer to are normally a little bit more selfish, have a bit more ego (etc.) and that's very much at odds with Arteta's coaching philosophy.

But I agree that we do need one of those types for matches where we can't score because fundamentally, the system doesn't work if no one can finish.

goon I basically agree with you ... selling Jesus is only gonna make sense if we're going to bring in at least two starting forwards in summer. It's just not a move to entirely rule out. If we're bringing him off the bench we've already got Trossard—two years older yes, but he's all end product.

Done defending him, he's not going to win titles as the focal point of an attack - Pep had 2-3 20 goals a season players when he was there like Mahrez, Sterling etc.

He's a good squad option for the wing that's it

He could have been more if he could at least stay fit, huge part of the issue is he can't. Not going to hate on him though, still love the way he plays football and he leaves absolutely nothing in the tank.

goon I’m in the same boat. His all around skill, application are incredible. Feel like he set the tone for the work rate needed last year. We took our pressing and running a step up from the previous season. We just need to be like Pep. He’s always had lots of forwards, and has had the best strikers in the league (Aguero and Haaland). You need players’ of Jesus quality to be in the conversation. You just need players like Aguero, Haaland, to be dominant

Burnwinter there is a bigger frontline design question. For 3 places, from where I sit, there is really only one sacred cow. If we can find ways to improve at 9 or LWF, then I am happy to reshuffle the pieces. I still think Jesus is a part of that final puzzle, but I’m open to up to 2 new starters.

Claudius I'd agree with that, and with your assessment of the list of players who should be untouchable. I reckon one or more players of prime age who've been regulars may be transferred this summer. Point we're at, we can't keep adding, and will have to start renewing.

We aren't going to sell Jesus this summer because there will be no market for him. It'd be hard enough to move him on if he was fit but he needs a big surgery in the summer, maybe earlier and he wont be back for ages.

Burnwinter we need to add at the top. I keep looking at Odegaard’s numbers. Chances created, through balls, expected assists, etc. He’s way out ahead but I don’t think it’s showing up in goals and assists numbers as much as it could. That says we still have space for improvements - whether it’s internal or new folks

Claudius Another forward as lethal as Saka would be a decent little multiplier for a number of other players. Saka being another of them. The only solution is then Havertz, Jesus or Martinelli being benched, moved or sold.

This guy still got magic in his boots but looks a bit sluggish and dare I say it a bit Laca like circa 2001/2022.

I can see the similarities, but at least Lacazette used to score in big games. This guy is so frustrating. And the alternatives are equally as depressing. If we don't invest heavily into getting a proper striker this off-season, we're not serious about winning things.

Or just play Trossard there. Which means dropping the other two. Havertz can only be an acceptable player up front. Jesus could be pushed to the wing. Just never play Jesus and Havertz together, we end up with too many players dropping too deep.
